I've met up with 2 online friends. One when I first moved here and she introduced me to the city. The other has come to visit me twice (he's always wanted to visit/live here) and stayed at my place for the week. These are people I knew for a very long time though.

No. The majority of them that I've met in person for the first time have been at a concert or a convention or something like that. We exchange real names at that point if everything feels good. So it's a very public and very easy place to part ways if I feel anything strange going on.

The few that I've broken that rule for, I've known and chatted with for probably around a year at that point. It's hard to hide true intentions for that long.

But guys, be careful! Meet them only in public spaces, with lots of people like parks, restaurants, and never-ever go to their houses/cars bcs they promised that „there will be other people/my family will be home too”. That's a red flag.

You can never be sure of that person's intentions or if they are really who they pretend to be. There are lots of people who were hurt by people who they were thinking that are nice persons.
