Why do only Mnet survival shows get international traction.

Good question, mixnine was decently popular but Yg had gone through some scandals at the time, loud promotion pictures to be honest made them look kinda bad and subbing was harder to find, also many of the contestants were too young.
Usually gg survivals do best here-mixnine's hybrid idea meant the bgs were guaranteed to win.

Most likely brand name recognition. Mnet is one of those occasions where "all publicity is good publicity." Even though they've been known for despicable acts, people still want to check it out because they want to know what all this "evil editing" is about or what all this "rigging" is about. Viewers are drawn to scandals, drama, and controversy. For international fans, they might even be used to this kind of thing, as that's how reality entertainment is in their regions.

Haha, basically! I was just about to mention certain American reality shows. We might not be a fan of the show or the celebs, but we'll check out headlines, highlights, or whatever we see regarding them. Like you said, it's like a toxic relationship we keep going back to just because it's kinda entertaining nevertheless.
Mnet is probably much more careful about not rigging the votes these days so they don't get in legal trouble for fraud, but they're definitely still swaying public opinion with their editing and choosing whom to give more screentime to.

there's never going to be a situation where every person is going to get equal screen time amongst 99 contestants so I guess the takeaway is watch it with a grain of salt and expect there to be some sort of issues going into it so one doesn't get too angry when things inevitably turn to shit...
or be like selfie and watch it once it's all aired and done lol (like I did with pd101, pd48 and 16)
