Sowon Nazi scandal vs Tiffany Red Sun scandal

  • Which is worse to you?

I think we overreacted to Tiffany and our currently overreacting to Sowon.

I think this is just the case of two foreigners who dont know about history.

Tiffany is an American Cali girl who never studied one paragraph of WW 2 and Japans role in it.

Sowon being a Korean probably didnt spend much time on Nazi Germany in school. Even Koreans these days don't know their own history. Remember what happened with AOA?

Let's cut her some slack. This isn't the first time or the last that an idol fucks up in regards to history.

  • Tiffany had an auto generated filter that she took down minutes after people told her about it.

Sowon deliberately posed and took a photo next to Nazi mannequin that was there for know who's how long before she even cane up with the idea. Sowon is much worse.

  • I think both are airheaded mistakes and I treat them as such. Both are the same level for me and necessitate an apology because these are touchy important issues. Hopefully we just come out of this more enlightened. However, as a Korean perspective, the red sun is a much much bigger no-no. There is no comparison. Of course, I'm living in the West and that nazi pic wouldn't fly lightly on the other hand.

I don't think just the offenders should apologize, but also the companies as well. Probably more so. Usually their use of social media are heavily monitored, so it was a brain fart for the whole company. In Sowon's case, the use of the place for whatever they were doing was a dumb idea. Kpop companies avoid all sorta topics like politics, religions (although they use their aesthetics way too much), and so like a plague. You would think WW2 would be off their limits of choices.

  • Tiffany had an auto generated filter that she took down minutes after people told her about it.

Tiffany also didn't re-post the same image somewhere else because she just had to have it floating online for people to see.

Edit: I didn't check Weverse but a fan forgot to delete their Twitter post:

  • Tiffany had an auto generated filter that she took down just minutes after people informed her and she didn’t re-upload the picture on a different site.

Sowon on the other hand took a picture with a Nazi statue because she thought it was cool. She deleted it because she thought “fans would be jealous” and not that people would think it’s anti Semitic. That is a lot worse

  • I'm not sure about a 1:1 comparison but perhaps they are disconnected from that two WWII front. In the case of Sowon replace Nazi with imperial Japan and I don't think she would joke about it. Japan was the bigger presence in Asia during the time and while I can't say with any certainty, perhaps there is lacking in education pertaining to the European theater of war. Personally, the Nazis were just a footnote in our history class while we spent so much time discussing the Japanese occupation.

I'm not downplaying what they did but this should be a teachable experience to the companies all the way down that they just shouldn't touch anything or joke around pertaining to the Axis powers outside of a proper context.

  • Tiffany also didn't re-post the same image somewhere else because she just had to have it floating online for people to see.

You saying Sowon resposted the photo after taking it down once? Lmao. Yeah that is much much worse, shows she at least knew it was offending some of her fans yet still wanted to show off on another platform

Also regarding Tiffany, antis and even k media were spreading lies about her including reposting it multiple times so some people probably think she did too

  • Also regarding Tiffany

Tiffany is a So Cal Asian American girl like me. I also didn't realize what the rising sun flag meant to non-diaspora Asians until I got into kpop. I learned about America's involvement in the WWII Pacific campaign through U.S. History class. But I learned it from a Western standpoint and not an Eastern standpoint.

I'm not like you or Tiffany but I live in the west (uk) and I've never heard of the rising flag being bad until Tiffany's scandal. Ask the years growing up I always saw that design used a pattern for various reasons. Video games had it, clothes had it, hell anything related to Japan had it including my school text books. Never knew anything was ever wrong with it. Hell I was barely

That's why I always felt that treating another culture of knowing exactly what's wrong with something is a bit unfair. I mean westerners associate the swastika as bad due to Nazi but I'm willing to bet a lot of them don't realise it's been used by other cultures/religions before Nazis even existed. I have Hindu friends who have used as a symbol to mean I think good luck were criticised for it by others (including me towards them before they explained it to me lol).

But sometimes you get things like even if you explain shit or its common knowledge and they still do the offensive/idiotic thing then that's a whole nother matter like what Sowon seemingly did in reposting it, or for a wider example the continued Confederate and Nazi stuff in America these days

  • Tiffany had an auto generated filter that she took down minutes after people told her about it.

So Tiffany is innocent but Sowon is malicious?

    Lmao oh okay.

Both incidents are not good but no need to cancel them for it. Tiffany not recognizing the rising sun flag is not the same as not knowing Japanese imperialism. Same with Sowon. People can make careless mistake even though they know the history. Tiffany may not has been paying close enough attention and Sowon may have mistaken the mannequin just as another Western soldier. People love to vilify others more than necessary

Did you bother to read the first line of op or even my post or were you that eager to put words in my mouth?

I didnt say who was malicious or innocent idiot, I said Sowons scandal is much worse considering she had tons of time before the photo to think about what she's posting. And after she took it down and reuploaded it elsewhere. Lacking knowledge is one thing but people telling you what's wrong, taking it down and reuploading is another

girl, chill out with the insult. you can't have a civil discuss for half a second of your life?

your comment was oriented as if Tiffany is innocent because she use something "auto-generated" and Sowon is "deliberate". Please do not fool yourself into thinking using such intended word choices and then act surprised people interpreted your words as it intended to be interpreted.

You said Sowon "deliberate" while Tiffany was not. You even extended that Sowon must have planned it as if it took a really long deliberate time for people to decide they want to take a picture next to something. Smh

The filter was not "auto-generated", she chose the filter because it was cute. A careless mistake. Sowon didn't deliberate chose to stand next to a Nazi soldier because she knew it was a Nazi soldier. The only thing she "deliberate" was reposting it somewhere else which you did not mentioned in the first comment.

  • I get annoyed when people put words in my mouth when there's literal evidence in plain view for everyone to see showing I didn't say whatever I'm accused of. You deserved that insult.

I said auto generated because that's literally what snapchat used to do: automatically generate relevant backgrounds/filters depending on your location in the world (don't know if it still does as I don't use snapcaht). It's the same for anyone, for me I could have Union Jack backgrounds or big Ben and stuff like that. That's all, nowhere did I say she was innocent because at the end of the day she did make an mistake

I said Sowon was deliberate because the process of wanting a pic with the mannequin, posing, having someone else take a picture and then uploading to your account isn't just something you accidentally do. It's not like she fell into its arms while at that exact time someone took a pic who coincidentally was logged into Sowon account and hit the upload button by mistake right? Those set of actions in order are indeed objectively deliberate regardless of what you think.

Now whether you think she meant to offend is another matter and I have no opinion regarding that since I have no idea about what she knows of Nazis and stuff, im simply saying given the outcome of her scandal came about through her deliberate actions it will be seen as worse. And that's before I found out her re-uploading it, is even more worse and backs my original point of it being deliberate

So stop making up your own shit about what I said

  • Both are bad. In both cases, ignorance shouldn’t even be the case. We all know what the rising sun looks likes as well as a nazi, so neither should have happened. In the case of the rising sun, we know how many idols have gotten in trouble for it. So it’s hard to believe that someone “just didn’t know” But the apology is what can make a situation better or worse. We saw it with Tiffany. Her first apology was horrible. She didn’t get specific into what she was apologizing for and it really didn’t seem that heartfelt or thoughtful. If she issued her second apology first, she would have been better off

  • Why even bother comparing? Both are bad and ignorant. Tiffany should know as a Korean person in public what the rising sun flag means and Sowon should know that Nazi’s shouldn’t be romanticized in any way. Both of them were ignorant and I can’t with some people’s mind gymnastics.

  • Idk but wasn't the reason Sowon deleted the pictures because she didn't want Buddies to become jealous? Lmao. I'm not gonna compare these 2 because both obviously lack education. But Tiffany atleast deleted it within seconds and personally apologized on her instagram while Sowon is hiding behind her company and acting dumb.
