I'm not Korean either, but I'll try and answer honestly.
BTS, BP, TWICE are for sure. Brave Girls, OH MY GIRL, aespa all saw success within the last year or so. And with Korea digging up older groups like Big Mama, SG Wannabe, and SeeYa last year, it's slowly making a comeback.
But the industry as a whole isn't permeating the consciousness of the public now, especially after the Burning Sun incident.

kpop is very mainstream, if you walk around Seoul and go to nightclubs they play kpop songs all the time.
Kpop is just pop music but in Korean. Its like saying is American hiphop mainstream!! Of course not everyone is popular like every other industry. Someone like IU, BIGBANG, BTS, blackpink, Red velvet, TWICE, ITZY are mainstream.
only a few are...but I guess most koreans would have heard a kpop song at sometime or another...

It is not a genre, but an industry. It has everything from ballads, hip hop, rock, R&B etc.,
The question probably should be asking whether idol-catchy dance music is popular in Korea, rather than kpop.
Given how much soloists like Paul Kim, IU figure on the charts, and how little Kpop groups are popular among 30+ demographic (BTS being an exception for reasons other than music). idol-dance music while popular can hardly be considered the dominant music in Korea. Trottist are very popular. Traditional fusion folks like Song So Hee are doing well.
The whole kpop isn't mainstream but a few kpop artists are.
At first I used to say no but if you think about it, kpop dominates the charts just like other popular Korean music. I mean we don’t expect every trot artiste out there to be very popular or show out on charts so I don’t get why we should judge kpop differently, even if just a handful of groups are dominating.
I mean IU may be a soloist but she’s more connected to the kpop industry. I think the industry has a foothold in the Korean music market

agree with this. we generally just call almost all songs coming from korea kpop but it's different in korea. Idol music there is mostly for the younger demographic (more on teens to 20s) minus some groups
Idol music isn’t equitable to Kpop. There is a lot of Kpop not by idols that is successful. So if the question is, is idol music still mainstream? The answer is yes, but it doesn’t have the dominance it did 10 years ago when the whole top 10 of the YE list would be lined with idol group hit after idol group hit almost top to bottom. BUT, trends are a thing & idol music could come back into prominence whenever.
