Seo Taiji and Boys is widely recognized as the start of Kpop.

TVXQ maybe for the idol industry though.

Maybe the start of kpop being popular outside of south korea. I would say h.o.t and g.o.d are the start of idol groups

Well we had girl group like S.E.S. and Fin.kl that was earlier, but I would agree that TVXQ probably was the start of the Kpop as we think of it today. Earlier groups and artist I would say was more "normal" korean pop groups with heavey influence from western music.

But seo taiji and the boys were household names. Their impact and popularity supersedes any idol group besides bts ig.

Seo Taiji and Boys obviously. I heard of them even before I heard of tvxq

I personally think Seo Taiji and the Boyz are the start of kpop even though H.O.T are considered as such ("officially").

One of the reasons why I think they are also one of the top 3 greatest of all time alongside BTS & Big Bang.

I was about to post the same thing. Kpop in the form that it is today was started by TVXQ.

If you go back and listen to most of 1st gen the music is so alien even compared to 2nd gen. But todays current groups and kpops overall sound are an evolution of TVXQ.
