Ever since they debuted in 2004, kpop groups have been churned out and the idol craze hasn't died down. They are the oldest group that ifans know of.

Maybe the start of kpop being popular outside of south korea. I would say h.o.t and g.o.d are the start of idol groups

Well we had girl group like S.E.S. and Fin.kl that was earlier, but I would agree that TVXQ probably was the start of the Kpop as we think of it today. Earlier groups and artist I would say was more "normal" korean pop groups with heavey influence from western music.

I was about to post the same thing. Kpop in the form that it is today was started by TVXQ.
If you go back and listen to most of 1st gen the music is so alien even compared to 2nd gen. But todays current groups and kpops overall sound are an evolution of TVXQ.
