Recently wonder girls had an anniversary live where Sohee mentioned she found the band concept really cool and Hyelim replied that she would have matched the concept ,but jokingly said that my lines would have disappeared. KARA, TARA, and Afterschool had new members and lineup changes often, What if 3rd and 4th gen had something like this? So many conspiracy theories were going around that Somi would be 10th member of Twice and 5th member of Blackpink, ot5 aespa hinting a new trainee whose avatar is naevis and real name Helen lol altho out of past SM rookies Yiyang would have matched their concept.

I thought it's interesting topic to discuss, and added a poll to it

  • Well, before PIXY disbanded, they did introduce a new member, Rinji, in a few tours, debuted in one of the new album's title tracks and I was fine with it.

So, I guess it does not bother me.

My answers were I like the idea and I'd be curious.

  • I would be curious and there are ways to make it work. One of the biggest girl groups of all time Destiny's Child kicked out 2 members and added a new member and it worked. I think fans are willing to accept it if it's properly executed.

I don't think it's a bad idea to add a member if there's a glaring hole in the group. I remember during Aespa early days I thought they should add somebody with a dancing background because the group was weak at the time. Maybe it would've harmed the group but I thought it would help them a lot with performances which was lacking at the time. Also the same could be said if a group vocals are very weak, then it might be a good idea to add a vocalist to improve the group.

I just think with kpop there's way more risk than reward to replace or add a member. I remember how much heat Yeri got with RV and I wouldn't wish that on anybody. I think kpop fans from popular groups are too rabid but it might work with mid level groups to add members.

  • I didn’t read anything about TripleS when they debuted with Generation. I thought they were going to be a 4 member group lol. It was a rollercoaster ride from there.

tripleS was very confusing to follow but luckily my friend explained to me how it will work. I think they proved why execution is important. I vaguely remember but wasn't Loona formed somewhat like tripleS?

Personally, I think it's fine but it's more difficult for fans from a big 4 group to accept it.

  • i dont think any hardcore fans would be happy about it

This logic only applies to boygroups, for example Suju fans actually boycotted Kyuhyun, Henry and Zhoumi.

But with girl groups, there are many successful examples: Gavy NJ, Jewelry, Wonder Girls, KARA, etc. Probably because most girl group fans are either casuals or solo stans, not many have big affection for the group. Solos can still tolerable the new members as long as they don't steal the opportunity of their bias.

  • It think it all depends on how the change affects the overall aura/energy of the group. Kara and Red Velvet adds made their groups feel more complete. The Destiny’s Child removals changed of the dynamic of the group and arguably impacted the overall palatability and marketability of girl groups in America.

Yeah, Loona was a flurry of sub-groups and solos right from the start too before the proper debut. I don’t know if I was a bit more clued in back then, but I found that easier to grok for some reason. I will admit, I was a bit dismayed when it finally dawned on me that TripleS would be 24 members. I loved the Generation team (AAA) and then loved them as a 10-man group for Rising, but eventually I came back round to them being 24 members as something fun to embrace.
