If you started your own entertainment label, would you debut a girl group or boy group?

  • If you started your own label, would your debut group be a girl group or boy group? 27

    1. Boy Group (16) 59%
    2. Girl Group (11) 41%

Stop lurking and start chatting. Can't always rely on NewJeans and my messy threads to get good conversations going here :meme-kek:

I'm loyal to the girl group soil and understand that ecosystem substantially better than the boy group one.

As long as I have the budget, I'm confident I would be the de facto Min Heejin (all the good aspects) of whatever group I debuted.

  • If I was a famous producer, TV celebrity or idol with lots of money to expend on production, lavish outfits, MV, marketing, advertising and paid gigs then GGs. The reason is GGs success are almost always based on hype. GG fans are always eager for the next group to listen. It's very hard to have hype and money and fail debuting a sucessful GG, they will be at worst mid tier

Otherwise BG all the way. BGs are not nearly as dependent of company and predebut hype/money. You just need charismatic, handsome (optional) and moderately talented (optional) idols and keep releasing music regularly until you have a small but dedicated audience enough to sell albums and concerts

  • You say that, but I can think of more girl groups who rose to great heights and out their small companies on the map than boy groups ultimately.

2nd gen is a bit innocuous to discuss because almost every company became relevant during that era, so the first group to debut on 2nd gen will be the first to rise. Beast, Block B, FT Island, B1A4 etc. I can only think Infinite as exception, as Woolim had Epik High first. We can even make an argument about Bigbang here but alas

3rd gen we had the two arguably biggest groups coming from really small (BTS-Bighit) and mid tier (Pledis-Seventeen) agencies

For 4th indeed we only had Ateez, but for GGs we had... StayC I guess? With kpop becoming more international more than ever groups need money to promote. That are several mid tier GGs and BGs, but not really hit BIG without a big company support

  • There's a much higher failure rate with girl groups and they seem to be more big 4 dependent. Boy groups would be the much safer option because girl group fans are fickle and are quick to move on. However, I think it would be more interesting to create a girl group because it seems you can be more creative with girl groups compared to boy groups.

  • GG. To me, it really isn't about the money, but the array of concepts you can do with girls and women. With men... Hmm... Not too many, without it going down the queerbating allegations 🫤

  • Fun question, and if I ever win massive on the lotto, I want to try it!

I would debut a girl group, because that’s where my passion lies. And the music would be hyperpop/digicore - I would bring it to the masses!

The group would be 5/6 members, and have a vibe similar to TripleS in that they’d be wearing streetwear and the music videos would be shot outside/on location, showing urban Korea.

I would try to think of ways for them to get a personal income asap, for example if each member was set up with their own YouTube channel from the get-go and there was always space at the office for recording + equipment, then they could each build up a personal income.

I would also try to make the group self-sufficient in the long run. For example, encourage 1 member to learn music production, another to learn videography and directorship, another to learn make-up and styling, and one to learn marketing/promotion/graphic design.

I would also do what hi-hat entertainment does, and leave the members with no debt at debut.

Lastly, I would also try to avoid having shareholders and investors, that would mean running the business at low overheads. To do that, I’d consider establishing offices outside of Seoul, possibly in Busan instead and taking advantage not only of cheaper business rates (much much cheaper) but also any local government incentives. As the company grows, we’d have 1 dormitory in Seoul and whichever group is currently promoting on music shows stays there before vacating for the next. After a full round of promotions, you get a holiday with your family to recouperate.

Every staff member would have to be multi-skilled. No middle managers. Think an indie games studio rather than an AAA studio. Even me as the CEO would also be a creative director and music producer.

  • boy group for me...

purely on the law of averages - BG survive longer than GG which will then imply that they generally provide a greater ROI on average
