Which generation created more legitimate stars, second gen or third gen?

Solo stars, not groups.

This is easy for me, definitely 2nd gen. IU easily overshadowing everyone in Korea since 2010. She's the super legitimate star above others. There were also GD, Yoona, Taeyeon and Suzy, which bunch of undeniable stars who still hold their popularity to this day. And we have countless others from the peak of the 2nd generation like Hyuna, Seolhyun, Jaejoong, Hyunjoong and tons more. 2nd gen also probably the peak of kpop in Korea in terms of public recognition.
In the 3rd generation, Jennie and honestly the whole Blackpink group is the only girl group still able to hold that title after years, while Cha Eunwoo and Jungkook stand out for male idols. I can’t really name anyone else anymore because most of them have short longevity in public eyes.

Jungkook, Hwasa, Irene (well until her scandal...), to name a few.

2nd genby far
Even 2nd gen stars like apink members, snsd members etc...have busy individual schedulez
When you barely see 3rd gen idols from disbanded or active groups promote well individually
The problem is the new gen
Idols no longer promote on tv show or radio show like they used to do so they aren’t able to get the attention from the normal viewer
All groups are promotîg through ytb content now to gather a bigger fanbase
But this create a disconnection between them and the public so they are no longer very attractive for tv station cuz putting them on their variety show will no longer bring them ratings
Cuz there's a facture between them and the normal viewer
And the young people that they attract and are part of their fanbase no longer consume tv show but mostly tik tok and ytb
+ the fact that when you move on to your solo schedules your fandom fragments and depending on if you were popular or not you'll have a lot of fans following your solo venture
And considering that now kpop companies only push 1 member of each group compare to the past
It’s eve harder to be big after your group activities

I already named Jungkook and explained my reason for the rest.

We'll have to wait until 3rd gen have as many 17-20 years old groups like SuJu, SHINee, Beast, etc. Or 14 yrs like Apink for the girls side.
So far it's not that promising, most groups debuted in 2012-2014 are currently disbanded or inactive.
---
Anyway, the reason that 2nd generation has more solo stars is simple: 2nd gen idols stared on TVs more than 3rd Gen, regardless of whether they were pushed for solo or not.

The oldest 3rd gen groups are around 11 or 12 years old.
We're not waiting god damn 6-9 years to answer this question lmao

Lol. They have already out impacted. Seventeen is in their 10th year are already much much much more successful than shinee or suju in their 10th year with sheer touring alone. No need to mention BTS ofc.
With the girls twice and BP are also so much more successful than their 2nd gen peers in the same time frame.
Simply put 2nd gen GGs had very small life span because of their inability to tour. This is why they needed solo careers. That’s not required for 3rd gen. Everyone in twice is making enough money with their group content alone something which was impossible for 2nd gen.

This a good question because seeing the title I instantly thought gen 3 because of BTS and BP on a global level. I answering this as you asked not as a group but as on solos. If I asked 100 random people which kpop stars they know I think Jungkook, Lisa and Jennie would clear any gen 2 names. Obviously in the kpop circle IU clears imo but as a global stars gen 3 has this one.

Those 3 are big names, but they're also only 3 names. The question is about quality and quantity.

You’re talking about actors I guess? In which case sure there are less idol actors in 3rd gen than 2nd gen. But that comes back to my original point that was only required because the groups were less relevant in 2nd gen than 3rd gen.
-
Might get heat for this but outside of Suzy and Yoona, not sure the others here I could call stars.

I kept it broad for a reason. I never said they all had to be solo artists; just stars.
Not knowing Hyeri is kind of wild, especially when she just had one of the hit dramas of the year...not to mention the crazy real life drama with her ex and Han So Hee.

Hyeri absolutely is. At her peak, she was insanely popular, and she's still popular now. Didn't she just win an award?
Indeed she did

And that's not even mentioning her starring role in the Reply series (same as Eunji).

Yeah in that case like I said originally having a solo career esp one on TV was more important in 2nd gen than 3rd gen so there are more solo stars in 2nd gen.

Well I guess we interpret star differently. Also its hard to judge as the 3rd gen had the euphoric rise of social media while 2nd gen ended while it was gaining popularity. K media has been more excepted in the west too since the 3rd I think that is down to the internet rather then the quality of the 2nd gen.
I still wouldn't put Hyeri in that list though, she is popular, been in big dramas and won awards but when I think of a star I also include global fame and she's not as the level of the others mentioned.

gd, taeyeon, yoona, junho, iu, taeyang, hyeri (variety/acting), eunji (variety/acting), suzy (acting) taecyeon (acting/variety)heechul (variety)
lisa, jennie, rose, jisoo, cha eunwoo, jk,v, jimin, bts etc, mino (variety/music) sejeong (acting wise), arin (acting wise), sungjae (acting wise) Changsub (variety wise)
I feel 3 gen but 2nd gen feel more impactful just bc of gd and iu
its curious how for 3r gen the only relevant actor is eunwoo
