Why is NCT the only major SM that never got a national-ish type hit?

Too many members

Too many members
Gee could have been with 30 members, it would still be a hit because of the song
-
I consider myself a kpop fan and it took me years to warm up to them and their concept and even then Their music is not people friendly. So imagine the Korean public
-
Koreans are done with boy groups in general unless you are bts or some legacy group like bigbang, shinee, exo to name a few. Hell they arent supporting many ggs either, so it's kind of expected nct never had a hit... it doesn't help they have too many members and their music is a bit divisive/questionable lol

yea, i dont think the public has the patience to force themselves to like something for years

I think maybe because the public doesn't really understand what NCT is due to their units and whatnot. Even kpop fans that aren't into NCT don't know what's up with them. If a version of them releases a song you have to specify which NCT it was which isn't the most accessible thing.
Compared to rest of SM groups it's very easy to say for example have you heard SNSD or shinee newest song and everyone can immediately know who and what exactly your referring to.

I don’t get what a groups concept has to do with liking a song? If you like a song then you like it, end of story. You don’t have to be emotionally invested in a group to like their songs.
I think the main thing is that they don’t produce songs that the gp usually likes, they release songs that they want to do. Which tbh, is what everyone should do. You can’t please everyone.

the strange thing is why it was never for problem for major SM groups to get big hits but never for NCT. Almost as if it was on purpose

but shouldn't the subunits have their own 'flavors'? Isn't that also the point of having so many members, so they can produce a lot of variety and not just a giant mass of sameness
-
They produce their own music?
Members have writing credits and input in their songs. They’ve said that they enjoy the music that they put out.
-
Because the songs they put out aren’t the songs that the gp like I guess. But nct have still managed to gain fans with each release so obviously SM now isn’t focused on making music to suite the gp’s taste, considering the fact that a fandom will be willing to buy albums, merch, attend concerts, much more than just the ordinary gp.

So they don’t pick the music they promote. They just like what their company want them to promote

If they have input in the music then they have some control over what it sounds like and how it’s performed. So obviously they like it.

Setting aside the fact that you obviously know nothing about their music... you think the solution to subunits sounding the same is to make one sound like another group? How does that make any more sense?

EXO is not original itself. It's based on TVXQ and Super Junior. But it's not copying, it's inspiration. In this case inspiration to produce something that will be liked by more people besides their fangirls
-
What do you mean by input? Song credits?
Yes

Yes
For their title tracks?

It's obviously liked by someone considering most current boy groups are copying them.

Some for title tracks but mostly bsides and solo projects

Why do they need a National hit though? They were marketed as a global group and have been successful both in Korea and across other global markets without a “national hit.” They were distinctly created and marketed to not sound like EXO or Shinee..
Each of the subunits has their own flavors - Dream is more sugary sweet pop, 127 is darker and more hip hop, WayV is sleeker and sexier.
These three songs are not the same.

yes. There are members who have written portions of up to 40 songs and have songwriting credits within the track listings. Additionally producers have often discussed in interviews how specific members participate in the producing and writing process. You can also see it in behind the scenes video of the recording process, which seems to support what the producers and writers say.

Their concept and sound are never meant to be public friendly.
