Do forign idols have a chance as soloists in Korea?
-
-
I think they'd have more success in their home country rather than in Korea
-
gyopos...sure. foreigners...highly unlikely.
-
-
-
would rosie be considered a foreigner?
which foreign artists have actually debuted with solo songs though...
tiffany from snsd? is she a foreigner?
they are gyopos
-
they are gyopos
sorry i'm not familiar with that term... like ethnically korea?
-
-
Certainly.
South Korea tends to have a really niche taste for certain artists and music. I noticed that certain western songs start charting in Korea out of nowhere or at a later time than the rest of the world.
It's a bit unpredictable, but I'd say it can be done.
An example would be Yukika. She's doing quite well as a foreign soloist in Korea. She's ethnically Japanese. She performs songs in Korean and in the style of Japanese city pop. It's an interesting situation.

You are right should’ve clarified this. Idols who are not ethnically korean, as we’ve seen foreign Koreans succeed like Tiffany and jessica and rosé.
I think amber from f(x) and fei from miss a debuted as solo. Don’t follow bgs so idk about them

I’ve never heard of her. Will check her out

and where they successful? (I don't know much about the second generation)
but sorn just released something and she is 100% thai but it was an all english song but i don't think it was that successful even though i really liked it
-
You’re right. But would be very interesting to see them debut as solos in Korea as they are the only group I can think of where foreign members compete or exceed korean members in popularity

If I remember correctly amber did well I think she went top10. It was after her guesting on real men the variety show and she got popular with the gp, but I don’t think she released another song not sure. Fei wasn’t successful I think.
Yeah Sorn song is really nice I liked it too. I’m focusing more here on big3 groups since they have a solid exposure throughout their career.
-
Jackson Wang maybe? I know he wasn't specifically promoting solo in Korea while he was at JYP though so that may not count.
Ten has released two songs through SM Station. tbh I feel like were he to do something solo in Korea, that it could so fairly well. He is pretty popular.
I feel like those are the best bets on the boy group side. Obviously China is an issue, but I mean outside of that. GOT7 and NCT have solid fanbases as well.
-
Thing is even if they have a chance I think most would kinda prefer to promote in their home country

I agree. I wonder if luhan stayed in exo how well would’ve he done as a solo. I feel like he’s the one male idol i would’ve bet he’ll do reallly well in Korea

well of the big3 i can only comment on those within my purview being the 4 foreign members of twice and Lisa right? so that's five members of the third generation and from the 4th we only have giselle and NN from Aespa who are big3...
i guess it depends on the popularity of the idol in question - the more popular the idol the greater the chance of success correct?

Henry got more recognition in South-Korea as a comedian rather than as an artist, it's pretty sad. But I think that he is doing quite good actually, his last mini-album last year sold around 65k that's great enough for a foreigner soloist I would say. His songs "Trap" and OST "It's You" were pretty popular when they were released, "It's You" was the most streamed OST in 2018 and 2019 on Spotify but it was more internationaly than domesticly.
-
Very possible. As long as they have built a sizable fanbase as a group with some good reputation in Korea.

Well with the talent he has, he should’ve done better with his music. I didn’t like the way SM failed to recognise him and he was disenchanted with it all and moved on. He also did well with SJM.

Yes, Rosè is considered a foreign.
I've seen plenty of times koreans calling her "foreign".
-
If they are asian (Japanese/Chinese/Thai/Korean-grown-born-in-foreign-country ) and if they have been in popular kpop group
yes
they have more than a chance, they will mostly do good, not as good as a korean, but still they will do good.

Henry is the only prominent foreign soloist in Korea.
He does a lot of Korean TV that I see no other foreign independent doing:

Yes definitely. But also how the public sees them? Like yoona and Suzy didn’t do as well on the charts compared to how popular they are.
Another thing is that twice foreign line and Lisa have a regular idol image and not going for the clueless foreigner persona ( I feel like amber and Henry posted here in the thread, went for that and got a push from variety first). So it will be interesting how the girls do

Depends on the idol imo.

I wasn't aware of how well Yoona and Suzy did but good to know...
sorry which idol has a clueless foreigner persona???? Amber and Henry???? wasn't aware of that (again I personally don't have much knowledge of 2nd gen so you might be correct)
-

Yeah well everyone have a persona on variety shows. Henry I think went with the cool Canadian guy who’s clueless about korean culture and amber went to an army show so her struggles as a foreigner were highlighted. But their effort in variety helped them in their solo career. So will be interesting to see the current idols who don’t go on variety much
