Good point.
I think you're right.
I had to double check but in 2nd gen-4th gen the biggest groups debuted 3-5 years after the gen started. If we're going to look at 4th gen for example. I believe this is year 2 for Gen 5. Then if we look at 4th gen the major groups to debut within the first 2 years were Itzy, Idle, and Stayc. Many thought Itzy were going to be 4th gen leaders, and possibly Stayc. However, nobody predicted Idle would be a top group, but even then they weren't leaders.
In the present, Itzy aren't leader and many don't even consider them as a top 5 4th gen group. Maybe there's a group that holds onto or captures a spot like Idle did. However, I don't think the real leaders or even a top 3 groups has emerged yet. I think the ones with potential to be leaders are Illit, Babymonster, and Hearts2Hearts.

Yeah, it's nice to see how well Idle did.
I remember back then lots of people called them late 3rd gen, but they're now generally considered as 4th gen.
True about Itzy. When they debuted, they were so huge that everyone thought they would be a top 3 group if not 1. They never reached that height again, sadly

I still like Itzy but that group is what I considered a missed opportunity. I thought they had it all to be a top 5 group but they didn't have the songs and jype failed to promote members when they went viral. There's been so many times where each member went viral and jype did nothing. I think the same thing happened with nmixx because Haewon and Sullyoon go viral often but they do nothing with it.
Sadly, Itzy will be remembered as the group to not to rush out, and claim a group to start a gen will be leaders.

I think Babymonster will. We got off a rocky start, but their popularity is grown organically

I think for the moment Kiiikiii and H2H have the biggest potential
they just debuted and already had a strong start with their debut song, if they can do this with their debut song imagine what they can do after their 1st, 2nd comeback
and i would say H2H isn't doing badly based on 5th gen criteria internationally considering that after 2 months they are still doing +400K listener for the chase

I thought Stayc was early 2020 2020, and Aespa was 2021. My point still stands that it's hard for the first 2 years of a gen to hold spot. the two notable groups in 2019 and 2019 are Idle and Itzy, and both aren't leaders, but one is in the top 5.
I will say it's hard for a group to maintain dominance if they debuted within the first 2 years of a gen. I can't think of a group that debuted within the first 2 years of a gen that maintained their spot.

I don't know anything about boy groups so I'm just going to be talking about girl groups.
We have gone past the point of having a generation leader or even a big 3 ever since fourth gen. The kpop market is so oversaturated now. I agree with the people saying that the biggest groups probably haven't debut yet. But out of the groups who have, illit and babymonster are going to be incredibly successful.
Illit has the hybe association and they already have a big fandom from RUnext. YG groups are monsters in terms of digital streams and babymonster has already shown that to be true for themselves/
