Even the names of their songs are dark e.g. Savage, Armageddon, Whiplash, Unforgiven .... sounds like titles of heavy metal songs ... and the members of such GGs only wear black, white and shades of grey (and sometimes denim)

Why are 4th gen GGs so dark?

Companies ran short on BB cream?
They need to actually take these groups down the Dreamcatcher road rather than giving them dumb rap songs in an attempt to make them look tough. PIXY was good at this before their unfortunate demise.

A full-on heavy metal sound for GGs would be cool, though....

I'd assume it's because the labels wanted to provide them versatility in the music.
-
Aespa stole all the tone up cream for themselves
Same as all other kpop idols

GO DARK OR GO HOME

I think it's a way go try to ride on BP more tougher concept compare earlier cute pop concepts. So "dark" and more "heavy" is kind of natural testing ground from the kind of music BP do. I would guess "cute pop" will bounch back in to fashion again soon. I hope..... a mix of different styles is the best.

I like Blackpink, you've overestimated their concept. There have been many girl groups with different concepts this generation. Some did the Newjeans concept, some tried Aespa's metallic concept. Not everything is about BP. There's more variety, especially in girl groups. BP never did a dark concept like Gidle or aespa. What I mean is that their concepts have nothing to do with each other.

I just mean it's a bit on the trend of not doing "cute" or upbeat pop and to that I include music like 2NE1 and Blackpink did/do.

SOME group's songs
Funny, I always felt that Love Dive had one of the "darker" feels out of a lot of songs from around that time.
BUT
4th Gen did come up and start becoming the dominant generation during a pretty dark time for the world in general... And that possibly was reflected in something even as bright and "happy" as kpop

Neither LE SSERAFIM nor aespa were given "dumb rap songs in an attempt to make them look tough," though. When aespa members rap, they stick to rapping about their lore instead of trying to be an underground hip-hop artist.
Same with LE SSERAFIM. Their "rapping" is more like sing-rapping, and they add their quirkiness to it. Listen to "Pierrot."
But I know what you mean. The Dreamcatcher route appeals to a niche market, and I think that sound should be explored more, at least for B-sides.

SOME group's songs
gold
easy
are not dark at all
we do not punish an entire classroom for the actions of a class clown
I think "Love Dive" is extremely dark. The song describes an intoxicating relationship, whether it's a romantic relationship or a person's relationship with themself, however the listener chooses to interpret it.

"It's so bad it's good"
"Narcissistic, my God, I love it"
"Oh, perfect sacrifice"
Those are just examples of the English lyrics.
Prechorus with Korean lyrics translated:
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
What lies beneath the surface
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
What you're hiding
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
It's full of dark energy. Definitely not the bright and bubbly type of K-pop I would think of. There's an aura mystery and danger to it.

I guess I never truly paid attention to the lyrics of the song even though it is my fav IVE song
