For me, GD moves me with his musical genius. On the other hand, since I don't understand Korean, I can't fully appreciate Taeyeon's extraordinary vocal technique and lyrics. So, in short, I can truly feel GD's songs and ı think he is unique. Taeyeon's voice and songs don’t stand out to me. When it comes to ballads, I prefer singers from my own country, and for pop, I listen to kpop groups and Western pop artists. So basically, she’s not on my preferred list.

Sure, you only knew BP back then, but now you know more. I was talking about people who ignore Kpop except 1 group and think they're Kpop itself. Most Kpop fans starts with 1 group. I started with BoA, then SNSD, FinKL etc. At first, I thought BoA was a Jpop Idol. I was uneducated as well. To be fair, back in the days, people didn't say: "This group or singer made Kpop." It's a trend nowadays.
I think it's still safe to say that the majority of Kpop fans are still the older people like myself. Above 30! Just because the new generation doesn't know much about the old gen Idols, doesn't mean most Kpop fans don't know her. Even if you want to ignore Kpop, you can't ignore Taeyeon, because she's basically everywhere, if you follow just one Kpop related site, you'll see her.

well I don't really wanna argue over semantics but I do think following 1 group and saying you're a kpop fan is fine, but I understand what you are saying. Also I was definitely that way with BP at first, I thought they were basically the first girl crush group to ever exist

I'm giving this one to GD.
But Taeyeon has been doing (surprisingly) great as well, just not at GD's levels who's also a gifted composer/songwriter behind many of Bigbang's successes.
... thinking more on it, I can't think of other 2nd gen female artists as great as soloists as Taeyeon has been doing 
IU of course, but she wasn't part of a group like GD and Taeyeon were.

I feel like the internet has given me a severe confirmation bias because I haven't really been aware of specfic news about GD recently nor have I heard his solo songs.
I've also run the whole gamut of Taeyeon's discography both on youtube and spotify.
I'm glad both are respected for their work and both are popular but I'd like to mention - unsolicited of course - that i'm quite the terrible person to ask this kind of question because the internet basically kidnapped me and hotboxed me with Taeyeon's songs, like those office place antics where you'd ziptie the trigger to a can of axe and throw it in a room like a smoke grenade, and hold the door shut.
edit: this isn't any shade but a good example about internet, recommendation algorithms and their silo-ing effect.
the only thing I really noticed about GD was monalisalove 's pfp and superyeah 's pfp when it was the squidgame thing. (current pfp too)
