This is the sad reality of Kpop fans! Not that I'm surprised!

  • Are you a fan like them, and only care about the MV? 23

    1. No (23) 100%
    2. Yes (0) 0%
    3. I can only connect with the song if there's an MV as well (0) 0%

This tells you EVERYTHING about Kpop fans! The song was released 1 week ago, and no one cared till the MV is out! Sad, really! Why Kpop fans don't want to listen to songs if it doesn't have an MV???💀

This is a publicized vote, because I wanna see your faces! So, don't lie! :meme-grumpy-cat:

  • I don't NEED to watch the MV while listening to a song, but watching the MV is the most stimulating way to be introduced to a new song, and I'm probably much less likely to check out a Kpop song if it doesn't even have an MV.

I wouldn't say having an MV has done wonders for this song just yet.

  • Not because of the music video, but the promotion. Unless you're an active Buddy or a Kpop fan who's deep in the K-pop scene, you probably wouldn't even know Gfriend had a comeback. It was only after the MV dropped and the album officially came out that people started to notice. But even then, their promotion roll out was so poor it barely made any noise. Like Soumu didn't put any effort at all and it's so obvious.

  • Well GFriend and their reunion under SouMu is not really a good example to test the importance of MVs.

But this is hardly news, how many Kpop groups manage to chart their B-sides (which is effectively songs with no MV) to any decent ranks, even if not as high as their MV songs.

Barely a few songs over the years make a mark, OMG's Dolphin, GIDLE's Fate, LSF's Bluebeard's wife (released the MV after few days)?

So of course K-pop fans largely are MV driven. It is "viewing music"

The exceptions are cases like IU, Bigbang(?) , who regularly chart their no MV tracks well too. Perhaps that more than anything makes IU not Kpop.

Personally, I like video performances, but not the MV, but live stages... but that is just me.

It annoys me to see these songs like this.

Dolphin and Fate were top 10/top 5 in Korea before any "special clip" was released. Fate was 3rd in Melon and IIRC Dolphin was 5th on Melon when it's specical clip was released.

LSF's Bluebeard was 101 on Melon when it's MV (an actual mv) was released.

Bluebeard was just another single, it wasn't a viral b-side like Dolphin or Fate.

  • I don't think quality has anything to do with charts. I'm not gonna argue about which song is better, because there's no reason for that, but if you look at the #1 songs on any Charts, you can see that most Pop or Kpop songs that were #1 are usually very similar.

There are some rare cases, 1-5% chance when a B-side or a not so typical song can top the charts. Like Day6 or Gidle's FATE.

MV's are massive help to gain attention, even if you're not that popular. For me:

    1. 90% about popularity!

    2. MV and positive or negative reviews.

For the 2nd, the best example is probably, Hwasa's Maria and I Love My Body. The 1st was a hit because everyone loved it, and she was at her prime, you can see her everywhere, and it was trending everywhere, the 2nd became a hit after the controversy with the police.

    And there's a 3rd option as well: You're IU or Gdragon. 😂

  • I pretty mush only listen to kpop on youtube with MVs so thats the way I often find out there is a new song out. But I of cource also read about new songs in different media also.

  • Well, in that case, BABYMONSTER has nothing to worry about. They have FIVE music videos for their latest album, one of which hasn't even come out yet!

Who knows? There might even be more on the way. YGE keeps surprising us! It seems like BABYMONSTER is just never going to end their DRIP promotion.

Tru-Multistan and JesseAlex can rest assured.

Perhaps that is a decent way to nuance between musicians and idols.

Though there is overlap, idols generally need a "visual" - MV/clips etc., to get people engaged in their works, while musicians are less dependent on the visual, can engage people just by their music.

Technically, both IU and GD are Idols, but being an Idol doesn't mean you can't be a musician.
