  • member suicide attempt... oh that's very bad

in same time if you are revealing it yourself either say member name or don't add such thing to your statement, now fandom will go crazy

I'm waiting for JYP response now

  • I knew it. That company is shit.

Why do you think Itzy lost so much weight? You probably didn't think it was of their own free will. JYP turned out to be the worst company in this regard and I'm not surprised. This is the company that once encouraged Momo to eat only ice. Anyway, I appreciate Kg for her courage, she made the right decision for her own health.

  • few things to note

    in Korea:

    - many rookie groups live in dorm with manager

    - there is CCTV installed in and outside dorm

    - in last years in JYP (Korean one) all members of groups were praising food in cafeteria and complimenting the fact that they can eat what they want outside, and mostly just workout

    so in conclusion

if girls were living in US (maybe someone can confirm it?), then something get sideways and some higher up fvcked up there

but if this happened with them living in Korea it's a norm, after all they are underage so they need to be monitored if adult ain't living with them

the other side of story is neglecting a knowledge about one's physical/mental health by higher up

another point is trainee debt, and sales. Did group had any? Even if not still I thought we are way past big companies making trainees/idols sign contract which put them in debt?

I always said it was JYP's fault. Even in the best scenario, were the girls wanted to lost that much weight, them, the adults, should have stopped them. What a shithole.

  • This is why I always support idols who choose to leave their companies. Situations like this happen far too often. Whether it’s Loona, NJ, Omega X, 50/50 and now this girl, they’ve all faced so much, and not everything can be shared with the public. That’s why, in my opinion, those who side with these companies are just cruel. How can they be more concerned about protecting and defending corporations with money and power than caring about the idols, who have their whole lives on the line?

To this girl, I really hope she win and break free from her contract. Don’t let them shut you up. Everything she talked about is pretty much normal in Kpop, we all know it, but that doesn’t make it right at all. Someone needs to break this cycle and the fake image these companies create that making kids think it’s all rainbows and sunshine.

That's just the same branding every company makes their idols peddle

Korea it's a norm, after all they are underage so they need to be monitored if adult ain't living with them

The CCTV is not their to keep them safe or supervise them, it's their to police them and their eating.

It's a norm but a deeply fucked up one all the same

I feel like she wanted to address what she knew but not out someone else's self harm as it may lead to antis and netizens shaming the artist like they did with Hara and Sulli when they publicly acknowledged their own harming.

  • And this is the main reason localized idol groups will never work here

At the same time though, it is also good that they did not sit idley by as bad things happened and just turn a blind eye, thinking "well yea it is okay, as long as I get famous"

  • Well this would explain why VCHA went dark.

I think we all know Kpop has a dark side that we conveniently ignore for our own benefit, and I'm not trying to excuse any of the industry's shady business practices, but to me this sounds like a combination of the Kpop system being fucked up and this particular group being completely unprepared for the rigors of it. I think most Korean trainees go into the process with at least a decent idea of what to expect, while these foreigners were completely blindsided. That doesn't make any of it right, of course, but it would explain why she's so flabbergasted about being in debt to the company, a business practice that even casual Kpop fans are well aware of.

If someone tried committing suicide due to their experiences at JYP, that's something the company should hold themselves accountable for, and they should play an active role in getting that person the help they need, but she also shouldn't be revealing that information unless she has the person's permission.

I will also say that I don't appreciate her making it sound like she "contributed to JYP's profits" by performing at "large venues" that were headlined by Twice, not her or her group. Quite frankly, I very seriously doubt that anyone was actually there to see them. Including something like that in her lawsuit really makes me question her intentions, as does revealing this information during the comeback of a major JYP artist, when she's had the better part of a year to do it. If she was so affected by her experience, where was the urgency to speak up? Did she think helping others who possibly find themselves in a similar position was something that could wait? And if she truly had such a shitty experience, why is she thanking them anyway? These aspects of her statement just irk me.

I would like to see the Kpop industry change for the better, but it's so stuck in its ways that I don't know how likely that is.

  • Also, I didn't know Big3-4 idols had training debts?? This is shocking news, cause It was always said in K-pop community they didn't

From what I’ve read, it’s more like investment debt than trainee debt. The group has to pay back the money spent on their debut, and if they don’t succeed, the debt just keeps piling up with new investments for their comebacks later. Like with Nj for example as they're the only one talking about this, they said they’ve already paid theirs off. So meaning their comebacks were running on their own profits, so they don't have this type of 'debt' anymore.

I never seen such a tone-deaf and out of touch comment

A kid is suing about being mentally and physically abused, surveilled, underpaid, overworked, other kids trying to off themselves and your main concern is Twice's comeback being affected??????????????

I think most idols sacrifice their true self or principles for the sake of their ambition to become famous. Their privileges increase when they become famous, but in the end, the treatment of these idols is no different from a slave contract. However, if they have big fandoms, they can sometimes make companies take a step back. The more popular they become, the stronger the group becomes. I think that's why SM never wants a group that is stronger than them and has a bigger fandom, then that group will swallow the company and they will be nothing without it.

I never said that was my main concern, that is just a misplaced assumption on your part. But the timing is suspicious. She decided to leave in May. It is now December. If I were tone-deaf, I would remain oblivious to the more questionable aspects of her statement and just default to giving her my full sympathy. I'm obviously not doing that.

  • Suicide attempt and eating disorder and no help

Where is this soncall "psychologist" that JYP keep mediaplaying

Also i kinda knew that debuting localize western group like vcha, katseye, dearalice, would be the end of kpop

These people doesn't have the asian mentality of hiding everything and just accepting things like they are.

It was just a matter of time before some start to speak and really unveil the truth behind the kpop companies

And most of the ONCE guild is more worried about the girls wellbeing now that this has come out, than anything. :sweatr1: That comment was unneeded for sure. Also lawsuits take a while to be filed, as supporting documents and stuff have to be provided especially in entertainment industry ones.

  • Also i'm pretty surprise to learn that vcha have trainee debt

The fact that they sold their image for the reality show and the fact that they didn't have a lot of training cuz it happen during a survival show

I thought that the company didn't invest enough in their training to have debt

+ The fact that the company sold the right of the survival show and the girls gave their right to use their image i thought it would help to cover the expense of their training

Well i guess Jyp Didn't see it like this

  • Also i kinda knew that debuting localize western group like vcha, katseye, dearalice, would be the end of kpop

Well it wouldn't be if the companies actually treated people like human beings and with compassion and care. So really it is the companies own fault. It is like when someone gets arrested for punching someone, if you did not want to be held accountable for it, maybe just don't abuse people.

  • She and her bandmates faced so much sh*t in JYPE that even led one of the members to attempt a su*cide and you are worried about twice’s cb?

It is the same company that forced your faves to eat only ice cubes….

Another example of selective reading comprehension. You'd think my post was only two sentences long based on the responses.

And I DON'T condone Kpop's strict weight-monitoring practices, but the ice cube diet was Momo's idea, not JYP's. At least get the facts straight.

  • The more popular they become, the stronger the group becomes. I think that's why SM never wants a group that is stronger than them and has a bigger fandom, then that group will swallow the company and they will be nothing without it.

Which is what happened with Shinhwa almost 20 years ago, so they are trying to make sure it's never happening again. It almost did with TVXQ and EXO (twice now), and they immediately did whatever they could to tear the members apart for daring to stand against them.

These companies never f--king learn. Just treat people decently and they won't have any problems for people to expose. The executives cannot get that through their thick money hungry and egotistical brains though.

  • Who & who?

I'm just confused. Didn't these girls not know what they were getting in to when they signed up? Did they think bring an idol is a walk in the park?

This is not the time to blame the literal children for being abused. There is never really a time for that. Have some compassion. The show was advertised as JYPE just training them and then they were going to be under Republic Records, the entire thing from the get go was not handled the way it was promoted to the auditionees, and when the kids are as young as 12-14 years old, they are not going to fully understand that someone would be so deceptive. The only children who usually do understand that by that age, are ones who had unfortunate home lives.

  • Honestly, I'm surprised about the 'going in blind' thought from you. Like yes they are very young but knowing its a Korean company, did none of them, nor any of their families do a vague google search on what its like to be a trainee in Korea? Like every industry has shady business going on, but its rare for it to be so well known, to some extent far more well known that the western music industry's dark side and none of them googled or even read the contract they were signing? Considering the long history in the west of artists getting screwed over by contracts, not one parent thought to read this contract and ask about the debt involved? Not saying its wrong or right for Korean parents to sign knowing all this, but clearly they go in at least somewhat informed so its mad to me they'd sign up to a show to be in a group, get through all the auditions and get onto the show and at no point research into what its like.

If they didn't I'm totally not shocked they expected to be paid not in debt, but the problem is the western industry does work similarly, you get your advance to make your album, if it flops you get nothing till the advance money is paid off and you may end up working for them for free for a time. Considering they literally debuted, opened for Twice, had a CB then dropped out of lollapalooza, I honestly don't know where that money would be coming from because haven't their fans been angry for months because they haven't been doing anything?

Sadly I'm not surprised about anything she mentioned, just a reminder that every company loves good publicity and for many the idea of 'eating balanced diets' is a marketing tool.

Apparently they all live together in a dorm in LA, and have done since at least January 2024, so it remains to be seen who was in charge of them and where all this went down.

  • If she was so affected by her experience, where was the urgency to speak up? Did she think helping others who possibly find themselves in a similar position was something that could wait? And if she truly had such a shitty experience, why is she thanking them anyway? These aspects of her statement just irk me.

It's easy for you to say this because you haven't been in her shoes, but sometimes people try to "toughen it out" or give people too many chances before coming to realization that enough is enough. She's just a young teenager who just started out in an industry completely new to her. I'm sure it takes time to truly process what's really happening, and that's not her fault.

As for her thanking people in the company, she can genuinely appreciate and respect specific individuals while shunning others. It's not mutually exclusive. Maybe J.Y. Park himself didn't subject her to abusive working conditions, but staff within the company did.

This is something even Jay Park has spoken up about. He and Jinyoung Park had a decent relationship and still have mutual respect for each other to this day, but Jay witnessed staff (the ones in charge of training trainees and idols) abusing trainees.

  • The show was advertised as JYPE just training them and then they were going to be under Republic Records, the entire thing from the get go was not handled the way it was promoted to the auditionees

Okay now THIS makes sense - thanks for the context. They signed on thinking they'd be under one of the biggest US record companies and would barely have any relation to JYP after the training was done. With this angle, it makes sense that Republic was hoping the show would get a huge following and when it didn't they half abandoned the group and show which makes the whole issue of who has been responsible for them so much more confusing and explains why she was thanking JYP at the same time as calling them out for abuse.

Since they apparently have been in a dorm in LA since January, who are the staff that have been taking care of them all this time?
