How do people know who's who in K-Pop MVs?

  • People know who's who in TWICE by using the TWICE song (here it is in case you haven't heard it):

But how do you know who's who in groups with individuals with similar hairstyles such as BTS?

What about individuals in K-Pop songs with an unusual hairstyle? KpopVeteranARMY correctly identified the news reporter with "crazy hair" as Gongchan in the song Beautiful Target by B1A4

Here's the song with the timestamp just in case.

How do you even tell if they all look the same? Lovelyz looks like they're all sisters!

What about telling who's who in NCT :pepe-cross:

(They have six sub-units. Twenty-six members are in NCT in total, and that includes its sub-units)

Edited once, last by bethesda ().

  • There's a learning curve. As you familiarize yourself with the members' faces and voices through various performances, music videos, variety show appearances, SNS posts, and other content, you'll naturally learn who they are.

  • it takes me a few times watching various mv's and looking up members photos for me to get down who's who.

    for example with the rampage:

there's 16 members only 3 are main vocalists the other 13 are "dancers"

when MA55IVE performs 4 of those 13 "dancers" become rappers and 1 of them becomes a vocalist.

When all 16 are together it's VERY EASY for me to distinguish the 3 vocalists from each other.

I also have learned quite a few of the dancers names. no two members look alike.

however it took me over a year to figure out who was who in sf9.

It really just depends on how invested in the group I am. If i only like (for example the rampage) 6 of 16 members i could careless who's who. But i try because i love the entire group.

  • for most groups I stan, I try to remember the order when they sing their lines (or at least when they sing their first line) so when I watch music show performances I recognize "hey that's the member who sang the first post chorus". that usually works for groups under 7 members. thats exactly how I stanned candy shop/red velvet/kiss of life/weeekly/youngposse

either that or I religiously watch a specific video by them until I force myself to recognize each member. (the amount of times I watched that dingo mafia video of LOONA is outrageous....some members had different hair colors thankfully)

What about for groups with more than seven members?

  • Constant exposure but it gets easily with time. I started with early SNSD back when colorful hair dye wasn't a thing, they didn't diversify costumes much and they had a trio (personally a duo imo) that was famous for looking the same.

Started off on hard mode. Everyone else was a cake walk in comparison

oh my lord headache inducing lol

  • For Twice, I just watched their variety show and eventually my mind was able to memorize names to faces.

For Girls' Generation, during the Gee era, I had a difficult time distinguishing Seohyun, Yuri, and Yoona because they all had similar straight, long hair styles.

But, years later, there was a song called 'Beautiful Girls' where the lyrics had their names sung.

What it didn't do was match the names to faces in the video as each name was sung, which could have helped new SONES remember them a bit faster.

Generally, since I don't have a photographic memory, it takes me about a week to tell members apart in groups, especially if they're large from 7 to 9.

  • oh my lord headache inducing lol

    Not even the worse one.

This scene in the mv that didn't get a lot of use. Someone posted a bts pic of them sitting in the waiting room during filming and had people guess who was who. and the photo quality was trash, just pink blobs in shiny coats, but I still got every girl right :gossip-raccoon:

The Bermuda Triangle? The duo was Yuri and Yoona?

Anyway, to OP, it is just about exposure. They are easy to differentiate with exposure and time.

  • for me it's variety shows with the members interacting with each other.

it's easier to remember instances where so and so member had some kind of memorable interaction with each other and me remembering that interaction and then recalling who the member was at that time.

I find that as the fastest way to remember member names that way.

  • So you're saying that one size does not fit all for this question?

If you pay attention to a group long enough, you will be able to differentiate them. These days, you have different colors or consistent hairstyles to tell. Just pay attention, and it will be easy.

For example, like DaisyTheGenuine said, SNSD is difficult at first, but after enough exposure to them, then most fans will be able to differentiate them even during their early days. Actuallly, I'll try their orange picture since it's been a while:

Left to right with quote a bit alcohol in me:

Hyoyeon, Sooyoung, Seohyun, Jessica, Yoona, Yuri, Tiffany, Taeyeon, Sunny.

Yuri, Tiffany, and Taeyeon are the three that are hardest in this picture. I'm confident of the order though from excluding possibilities lol But maybe I'm wrong. Another sone will tell me.

  • I honestly struggle with both remembering names and if I do remember the names struggles to put the right name on the right faces, even in groups that are favorite groups. In some groups I recognize the different individuals, but can't remember the names, and some times I know names, but can't match them to the visuals.

The only super easy group for me was 2NE1, and well BP is pretty easy. T-ara I struggled to tell who is who even if they were my top favorites, you always get some members that are easy to pick out, like Boram in T-ara, but others take a bit of learning. Crayon Pop had twins so.........

And I have groups I know the names of the members, Aespa, but I can only put the right name on the right person on one of them (NingNing), the rest are just looking too much alike for me, but I have put that much of energy into learning them.

A group like Girls' Genartion I did know the membembers that well during the their peak, same there, you got some easy ones like Sunny and Yoonah, but hard time with the others. Today I know them a little better. Twice a bit similiar even if I feel they are a bit more easy.

But I really put much effort in learning who is who, if it's not a group that are a top favorite. I just learn by read articles on internet/forums, and maybe clips on youtube and learn that way. I guess people watching variety shows learn the indivudals in groups at a different level.
