Newjeans aesthetic isn't Y2K !!

  • I see a lot of people talking about how NewJeans aesthetic is Y2K aesthetic, and i have to disagree

the Y2K aesthetic completely lost all his meaning with the new generations of people born around 2000 who weren't even born during the Y2K aesthetic and now are using the term Y2K to name an aesthetic retro

but the truth is that the Y2K aesthetic was a popular aesthetic from 1997-2004, and it's mostly characterize by the use of shiny clothing, oakley, gradient etc... and it rely heavily on the use of technology and use of futuristic looks.

and the reason of this is because the Y2K aesthetic was use to express the optimism of people born pre-2000 for the 21st century

this is some goood example of what the real Y2K aesthetic looks like

what's peoplee often confuse as Y2K aesthetic and call by error the Y2K aesthetic

is actually the type of aesthetic who succeed to the Y2K aesthetic, and it's call the MCbling aesthetic and was popular from 2004-2008

and also call sometimes the Bubblegum bling.

It got pretty popular in mid-2000 thanks to the creation of Myspace, mean girls movies, Ipod, and shows like "simple life" from paris hilton

the Mcbling aesthetic recently has grown in popularity in the media but because of young people especially on tiktok etc... who didn't grow during this era it's often refer to them by mistake as the Y2K aesthetic

and this is some example of the Mcbling aesthetic

and give credit where it's due to all these visual director who are doing such a hard work to give a clear aesthetic to a group

  • NJ also have 90's b-boy era hip hop styling in there as well, it's clearly a mix of multiple aesthetics depending on the shoot

  • Nah it’s definitely Y2K, which really went from like 1998 to 2009ish

The “bling” came from hip hop culture (I believe Lil Wayne popularized the term) and it eventually meshed with pop culture (Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, etc.) in the form of bedazzling/bejeweling clothes and accessories.

Not every MV released during that time was super futuristic. Most actually were not, which is why the ones who did go that route were groundbreaking at the time.

  • Yeah but Y2K aesthetic iss still a very different things from what people consider Y2K currently

and yes ofc they'll not dress with a Y2K style to do their shopping

my point is just to show that it's not Y2K

it's more to show that what eveerybody call Y2K isn't actually what's really Y2K

that Newjeans isn't Y2K concept even if their brand evolve around the 2000's fashion

more than calling them Y2K which is a very distinctive aesthetic, Newjeans are more a 2000's vibe concept GG

because their outfit is reminding of the 2000's fashion

and some of the aesthetic they use rely a lot more on the Mcbling aesthetic more than the Y2K aesthetic

Y2K aesthetic existed even in Korea '-'

    Y2K aesthetic isn't 2000's fashion '-'

Just like Girl crush is a popular aesthetic in korea, that doesn't mean you see girls in korea walking in the street wearing outfit full on leather and wearing harness

and literally every big group in Korea in the 90's tried the Y2K aeshtetic

Which envisions a world where people walked around carrying playstation controllers

  • You're all wrong actually, Y2K was the unfounded fear of an international computer crash, not an aesthetic. :pepe-use-head:

The sort of gaudy futurism seen in these examples was a product of the 90s and people looking towards the new millennium. It was already in use long before most people became familiar with the term "Y2K."

Most of the stuff NewJeans actually wears is pretty generic and impossible to pin down to a single decade. If I had to give their aesthetic a name, it would be the "We live to consume American teenage media" aesthetic.
