Pronouncing Tzuyu's name should be a rite of passage for Onces
-
Still trying to figure out how the Yu in Tzuyu becomes a Wy sound.
-
-
yeah
It's ok, before I found out I was sounded like a dying robot standing over a pool of water.
-
It's more like Tsu(as in tsunami sound) and Ee (as in feel sound)

Even stiil, how does the Yu become Ee?
-

because its not yu, they just went it with since its the closest sounding
Just like DaHyeon is DaHyun
-

I get that for the Korean spelling, but it makes 0 sense when putting that in English letters.
Like 쯔위 should not be spelled Tzuyu when converting it to English. So not sure how it became that. Because Yu does not sound like Wy or Ee or even close to that, and Yu is not really the closest sounding.

Let's just put it in the same word vault with the likes of colonel, Wednesday, bologna

Is Tzuyu the closest English writing of the Taiwanese Mandarin pronunciation ?
I'm not a native Mandarin speaker. Just studied a bit in college and forgot it all.
But Tzuyu is what I would consider the English approximation.
Ziyu is the Mandarin. (Less the intonations)
It's hard to represent it in a standard English way.
But here's a good pronunciation video.

Now that I think about it, if they didn't write Tzuyu for the official English spelling, I wouldn't have found out about Twice and would probably not be into kpop... crazy

How did that happen?

That's crazy. Wonder why they decided to switch up the pronunciation in Korean like that.

Chou ze/zi yu/yi is probably her Mandarin name
Chewy is how her Korean name is pronounced
I want to know her real name as in how people in Taiwan call her. Is it not Te zoo you? Or Soo yoo?
Edit: Never mind, Mina spontaneously scream her real name on that Swiss bridge, it is probably Chou Zoo You
The video I linked is her real name in Taiwan.
They speak Mandarin in Taiwan. That's how they say it. The video maker is Taiwanese.
That's why I've always thought of her as that. Rather than her given Korean name.
-
Really lol?!? That's funny.
It's one of the most memorized for me. I had to burn it onto my heart in fanboy training camp lol.

I don't know the specifics of how they transfer names between languages. But I'm guessing it's the closest equivalent that can be found among the individual characters, maybe in meaning or sound or some combination. Not sure though.
I guess, but Yoo is a common last name in Korea. So I feel like that'd make more sense, but I just need to accept I'm never going to figure this out lol. Especially as someone who speaks neither Mandarin or Korean natively.
