How would you feel if aespa rebranded with more chill, refreshing music when they finally come back next year?

  • No one knows yet why aespa's CB is being pushed back to early-mid 2023. Some say its because there's a songwriting crisis within SM.

What if this is because of a rebranding opportunity to release less loud/industrial sounding music but instead more chill/RnB. I haven't followed the SMCU but I know they kill off Black Mamba at the end of Girls so perhaps this is a chance?

Genuinely curious, not a set up thread. How would you feel if they went for a more melodic sound?

  • I think Aespa is incredibly talented so any direction musically they want to try, I am there.

I'm a little biased but I think this is the best song they ever released:

  • ok this is my bone to pick

why not go synth/cyberwave as the story concept suggests? like stop wallowing in modern kpop start actually going true to your image.

Its seriously ticking me off that aespa brings this super story complex cyberspace background and then SM gives generic sm songs for them to perform.

Drag me all you like I stand firm in my view. if your backstory is going to have cyberspace in its gotta sound the part. no industrial, street, hiphop as baselines, take cyber / synth /edm etc and then build on that. Dreams come true is alright in the sense that kwangya could have a pocket simulation of a much more relaxed and fairy like area but ultimately they are straying so far from their image is I'm starting to become a token MY. Next Level and Black mamba were the closes so far but even they were somewhat tenuous.

Though technically digital computing can simulate anything as long as you set the rules of simulation right so ultimately it depends on what your interpretation of a kwangya would be.

I didn’t think the hyperpop/PC Music stuff was too far off from the aesthetic tbh

My guess is that synthwave would underutilise the rappers in the group? Plus if they have that girl crush side I haven’t seen that done well with a retro synth sound yet, but I’m open to being educated

The noise element of eg. savage actually work well for an industrial/dystopian look

  • I think they should stick with their current stuff since that's what bought them the fans initially and they've had quite a bit of success because of it? (others would say in spite of it)

if there is a will there is a way. Rapping over synthwave isn't common but in my minds eye - or ear, rahter - I was thinking if you did a smooth rap, almost singing-rap, over a patch of rhythmic synth backing would be a nice basic approach. (somewhat of an example)

Although if they took from edm, they could have a pretty damn hype rapping over some sick drops or even antidrops (fakeout to a chill section).

Girl crush (talkin physical aesthetic, I don't have a formed idea of what girl crush as a sound would be) can be girl crush regardless though but taking cues from some retro stuff, I was thinking along the lines of the stuff seen in ghost in the shell or even just basic Darkcore-Techwear or warcore clothing would fit the story well.

Savage has all the right things in all the wrong proportions in my opinion. It has rumble backing but because its scaled so far back it lacks momentum; they're fighting SM skynet aren't they? also also also It lacks flourish. something audibly flashy that says YES THIS IS DIGITAL or smth. Aespa's voices has good power and finesse but like a rapier it somewhat lacks battlefield presence. The backing track imo should not have fell in line with their voices, rather it should have had been the thing that added momentum to their overall performance.

I'm just nitpicking tbh. Its just slightly deflating over the difference between the story and the songs. Its not even the girls fault, its just the backing. I swear if they just added a bit more rumble and a meaty synth beat to accompany the high elements in savage would go a long way.

  • I love r&b, which everyone knows, but I don't think aespa should change their style. It's part of what makes them distinctive. Their sound is already quite melodic (just because it's not your type of thing doesn't mean all the hallmarks of intricate melodies and harmonies that are SM are not right there in the songs - the song builds on most aespa songs are quintessential SM) and there's enough traditional b-sides out there if you really want that traditional gg sound (Yeppi Yeppi is right there <X ). Personally, I was quite disappointed that there was so much of these types of songs on Girls - 6 oof the 9 songs are exactly this type of traditional gg pop. Like that's not what I'm here for from them.

I also think fundamentally SM could give a shit less in some ways what other groups are doing and is just gonna do their thing. (Sure, they pay attention to what's hot in the marketplace, but most times they just seem like they're going to do what they do, for better or worse.)

If this was how SM rolled, they would have flipped NCT to be a more traditional bg years ago when they were still struggling instead of doubling down on "NCT noise'"and RV to be a more traditional gg when more traditional groups like Twice were taking off. The songs already exist in their repertoire, whether it's RV's red side or many of the NCT b-sides.
