This looks sad tbh. 2nd Gen had so many groups who aren't god tier popular but still popular like 4Minute/miss A/Apink/Secret/BEG/After School
wait i thought EXID debut on 2011
but yeah the gap between gfriend and other group is just too big . The top5 and top 10 is just another 2 different level unlike 2nd gen where almost all top10 are really successful
idk AOA is very successful but can we really put them on the same list as 3rd gen when they peak on the same time as APINK,Girls Day and EXID ?
the moment AOA start to flop/underperform was the year when TWICE and GFRIEND hit it big (2016)
but i think AOA still cant beat GFRIEND bcause of album sales (and GFRIEND have back to back national hit, the only song from AOA that can be considered as national hit is Heart Attack)
I think they debut in 2012 same as AOA. I personally see GG 2012 and before as 2nd Gen. This is because there is a very distinct gap between 2012 and 2014. 2013 was like an empty year for GG with no notable debuts and it was really 2014 with the debut of Mamamoo/Red Velvet that started a new generation.
The thing about 2nd Gen GGs is that even though they are ranked like 7th-8th or lower they all had some peak of success. Like this is how I see it
1. SNSD
2. 2NE1
3 - 5. Wonder Girls/Kara/Sistar (in any order)
6. T-ara
7 - 8. f(x)/Apink (in any order)
9 - 13. AOA/EXID/4Minute/miss A/Girls Day (in any order)
Like even until rank 13 the groups are actually moderately successful. 3rd Gen is just sad. Top 5 (maybe 6 with Oh My Girl) or nothing

I only mentioned AOA because you listed it in your original post. I always thought AOA is in the same generation as Sistar and 2ne1
But yea, my opinion AOA > GF

I dont count AOA as 3rd gen since they peaked with 2nd gen gen in 2014-2015 when the first 3rd gen girl group were debuting. Basically for GG the start of 3rd gen was 2014
