I know this is an international forum but people seem to have a general grasp of SNSD's domestic popularity

Doesn’t BB exist ??? Lol
their domestic popularity is just their company putting them on tv everyday so probably not. Kpop has changed.
Without having an acceptable measure of popularity, this can't be answered.
In the peak of SNSD, going by MV view counts, Instagram followers etc, wasn't a thing. Maybe Naver/Cyworld kind of statistics can be used.
But if we are talking sales, SNSD have long been surpassed. Probably by SISTAR itself, never mind Twice or Blackpink and if not GGs alone - BTS.
SoShi is a major landmark of Kpop history no doubt about it. Kpop matured as an industry in the 2nd gen and they were the quintessential GG - so Nation's GG indeed and their impact, they pretty much are the standard model for later groups.
However K-pop is no more domestic or even just East Asia/SEA. It has drastically grown in terms of markets, processes, production etc.,
So by numbers, even within Korea, they would have been surpassed in 2013-14 itself.
But it is "impact", there they definitely would lead the list of most impactful of Kpop acts.

Idol poll 2012
On 2012, Gallup Korea had a poll on idol recognition.
A ranking was made about what idols were recognized by the general public.
(Bear with me that it is not organized. I am not gonna spend the effort to organize 96 names.)
>Ranking done by Gallup, one of the best research organizations in Korea (very credible)
The audience is people in their 10~50's. This ranking is from 2012
1) SNSD Yoona (700 points)
3) SNSD Tiffany (603)
6) SNSD Seohyun (534)
7) SNSD Jessica (523)
SNSD Sooyoung (514)
9) 2AM Jokwon (480)
10) SNSD Sunny (468)
8 out of 10
The only blemish, of course, was the person under this sentence sneaking in.
idk, it's hard, but during their prime years, I don't think a single artist come even close to their % of TV appearence. Everyone was talking about them during their prime years, it was just mad. If you don't talk about fan and just raw how much people talk about, prime SNSD is probably above everyone.

Yes if you use Gallup Singer of the Year. Then no GG since SNSD in 2010,2011 have topped the poll.
But if any K-pop group, then BTS has been topping it last 4 years. Big Bang in 2015.
If any K-pop act then Psy took 2012.
And of course IU, 2014 and 2017.
So SNSD have been surpassed even in this metric.
Just not by any GG.

It makes me wonder. If 20 years ago, people have access to YouTube and other social media like now, and not just consume whatever tv or radio put out (which heavily dependent on how music labels able to push their acts to radio and tv), how many icons and legends will remain? And how different would the music landscape will be?
Right now we still have radio play as indicator of popularity. Can’t wait for that to phase out

We see korean reality shows like show me the money completely dominate the charts every year. Korean tv and US radio are still being consumed by a lot of people even though it's decreased. There's still long way to go before people completely stop consuming them.
Never say never but then again SNSD in their era were untouchable and it seems extremely hard to be at the same level as them.
The key thing to remember which I think kpop fans either ignore or forget about is that SNSD wasn’t just about music, they were an entrainment industry by themselves. Sure they dominated in music and could get smash hits or sell a ton but more importantly they were ingrained into Korean culture though other routes. Anytime they went on tv they’d get some of the highest ratings (even now they still do), they endorsed every thing from tech to fashion, they were constantly being referenced on dramas/tv shows/other idols and so on. No matter what type of Korean entertainment you were interested in SNSD was inevitable. They were the culture icons for a reason to the point that were the face of kpop and Korea.
That level of popularity isn’t easy to replicate and can’t be done using just one particular aspect eg having a couple smash hit songs doesn’t achieve that as we’ve seen many ggs have national hits but obviously not reach national adoration levels like SNSD. Just look at the recent non stop positive news about SNSD simply appearing on multiple tv shows, there’s no info about their music or even an exact date yet and they’re already making waves a month in advance.
I don't think any other company can replicate SNSD initial run. Music wise maybe yes because there's ggs who even broke their digital records like Sistar and physicals like twice or bp but domestic popularity implies a lot more, cfs both as group and individuals, concerts in korea, TV appearances and mentions, idols and trainees who still choose them as their role models, the impact they hold till this year, etc and no other gg has come close imo
Not even if SM wanted to replicate it they could
SNSD was invincible from this day

OP's question was whether any K-pop GROUP will surpass SNSD in domestic popularity.
Not soloists.
So talk about GGs and BGs.

No GGs beat SNSD ever so it took a soloist to do that
Not this year at least.
So you got one of the biggest girl groups around coming back at a big milestone date, right when fans are able to attend in person (and have been itching to get back to concerts) they are in the perfect niche market where they are women in their prime who can corner the nostalgia market and the young market with returning as Girls Generation! just saying the name brings a smile to my face they are "The" group.
I hope them coming back spurs ALOT of interest that other gen 2 groups see and want to capitalize on I could and will be spending money on a 2ne1 or wonder girls comeback.
