And i'm not talking about having unrealistic expectations of them sounding like they ate the cd while dancing. I'm talking about them being about to sound good singing their own song while just standing there. There is so much studio wizardry that happens nowadays. Does it really count if they only sound good cuz of sound engineers?
Can someone actually sing if they can't sing live?

I have heard that without all the studio equipment and accompaniments some singers voices sound weak (I'm not just talking about K pop here, mainstream as well). That's just what I've heard, that's not my personal opinion.

That's pbly true for a lot of them. Most people need proper training to learn to support and project and I don't think the majority of idols get enough training in this regard.

Apparently britney spears doesn't sound good live...that's why she lip synch's all the time. People paid money in vegas to go to her resident show only to leave disappointed that she lip synch's. they claim it's because of all her heavy choreography but i think that's just a cop out.
I don't expect someone to be super 100% perfect live, I personally don't even mind lip synching. I just want to see a good performance and enjoy what I'm seeing and of course for the artists to have fun.

honestly a lot of singers just don't have the skill set to support their voices live. there are western pop stars that sound pretty mediocre or even bad bc they have awful technique even if they have a pretty or unique sounding voice. it's not that unusual
i guess they're still singers even if they're incapable of singing live or lip syncing. and that doesn't stop me from enjoying their music

Yep and I'm the perfect example of that

What a coincidence, I am too!

The style in which she got famous off is to blame, she regressed and gained no progress from her childhood given how the pop scene was and what they wanted her to sound like.
This vid explains it pretty well. Her technical peak was said to be when she was a child as wellExternal Content www.youtube.comContent embedded from external sources will not be displayed without your consent.Through the activation of external content, you agree that personal data may be transferred to third party platforms. I think only recently she was able to get her life back from him. It's quite sad what they did to her.

Studio wizardry can't make you sound like Mariah Carey if you sound like Britney Spears. But it can make someone with a barely passable voice sound okay enough for a disposable pop song. I mean Jennifer Lopez has a whole singing career. Look, I'm out there on the floor, waiting for tonight and shaking my ass to a song, no lie, but sis ain't a great singer.

There are lots of variables going on here.
Lots of idols have the potential. They went through training for this. They passed auditions because they could sing. However, burnout is a real thing. Without proper care and rest, they can lose some of what they had. They can't just wake up and sing the way they did when they were still fresh, especially not when combined with dancing. Those idols probably can sing, but they just time to regain what they had.
I wouldn't doubt some others just aren't able to sing, but make up for it with other skills.

interesting question
if the issue is a once or twice off-sounding thing then it may be excusable to a variety of factors but if the issue is continuous that is they constantly cannot sing live without sounding bad/off then it becomes a problem
singing is like any other activity - we all have good and bad days whether be at work or school - and a bad/off day at work shouldn't mean you get fired (assuming not major stuff ups) or since I like basketball every basketball player is going to have an off day some point where one's shot just does not fall no matter what it doesn't make them any less of a good basketball player
the problems is if that issue of the off day at work or basketball continues then it becomes a problem so getting back to singing - the occasional off day I'd say one is good - if it continues or is a regular occurrence then it becomes a problem

every college class has atleast 10 people who sing better live than many celebrities
singing and to some extent acting are the careers where talent gets overlooked the most
you dont need a portfolio of work or an exam to test skills, you just need to be found attractive and relatable by the masses
that said, listen to this
