This is a tricky question because when I think about 4th gen, apart from my favs I think of Itzy, mainly because they were THE girlgroup when 4th gen started and they didn't have that much competition. Objectively and as time passes though, I think NewJeans, aespa and Ive is the answer, but I do not think the difference between them and say Le Sserafim, G-idle and Itzy is massive yet.

It sounds like SM is trying to trademark a new sound and make it the trend like Aespa Savage or NCT Resonance, I bet soon all SM artists songs will sound like this, and knowing the Kpop industry they will follow and soon enough 100 rookies will be debuting with crappy imitation songs.
I will admit however Step Back has an earworm quality like Savage or other recent SM songs that makes you come back to it despite it being "noise music", but I still wish it doesn't become the trend.
This song feels more SuperM to me but I know what you mean

I will say that it's definitely not the best song to showcase Wendy's vocals

Do you forget that Nct sub unit probably almost as much as all hybe artist combine, which make them just equal. Having many older acts and female acts should giving them advantage to their sales. Even Exo the one you said not get promoted sold more than million albums. With this in mind, their sales is okay but never impressive especially if you compare to hybe. Even in hybe, there are only 4 acts that really active which is bts, svt, txt and enhypen. So, the second company is really impressive especially from business perspective.
There's nothing impressive business-wise about Hybe numbers, apart from the fact BTS is still the highest contributor on album sales when they barely released anything new this year, Seventeen and Nu'est were bought when they were already selling well, and Enhypen had the huge investment predebut of a whole survival show with CJ so the expectations were there. While it's true they have less acts, this just emphasizes how good SM's year was that they sold about the same as a company with 7/8 times their value, and how Hybe despite buying Pledis or making the I-land investment, they still heavily depend on 1 group to make the company have the value they have today.
If anything, BTS keeps being impressive business wise, but Hybe overall? Not really

I've been saying for years how awful YG has been for the managament of Blackpink, the company has literally the biggest girlgroup on the planet and they barely release music and albums, the "exclusivity richness" thing YG bets for has it's limits. My guess is that this no concert thing has affected their income heavily, and YG seems the type to just wait for concerts to come back instead of releasing an album and selling +1M, they are that incompetent... And knowing the expectatives people have for Blackpink's MVs... Yeah, YG is just begging for concerts to come back, if they give new content to BP it will be to remind people that they exist.
