What is wrong with being a success stan?

I know a person who for some reason likes to keep track of successful films over the years. The odd thing is he doesn't actually care about the films themselves, just their box office success. He got happy Endgame beat Avatar at the time because it was a massive achievement but if I asked anything about the film itself he barely knew anything. He didn't know half the characters, he didn't properly know what the infinity stones were, he didn't really care that it had lots of callbacks to a decade of movies.

So I asked why he even cares endgame became number 1 of he's not even into it and he simply said it being successful was the reason he went to see it, if it wasn't breaking records he wouldn't even care. He admitted doesn't have much interest in the MCU outside Spider-Man.

This is so common? Isn’t this how everyone watches movies? How else do you decide to go watch a movie? If a movie is popular I wanna see what the hype is.

Bit different form stanning since it’s one time commitment only to watch a movie. Same with popular songs or chart toppers. I usually check out the songs that are popular or topping some Spotify chart.

He went to see it purely because it was smashing box office records, not because he's a fan or a non fan that got enticed by the hype/popularity like what you're referring to. Hes a numbers man, doesn't care about hype or reviews. I don't think he actually cares for watching films, just counting their revenue lol

If a fan follows a group because of the music then there's nothing wrong with it, but if they're only stanning because of how many sales an album has had or views for a video then that's for the wrong reasons imo.

Being a success stan means you will drop your faves once they flop or get shadowed by a new one only to repeat the process. That is a no no in my book
