It just wasn't fun. The people we went with just weren't prepared and I got no sleep. It really put me off the whole tent in the woods type camping.

yes, a lot. I love camping.
Fishing by the river, making fire, gather wood, sleeping in tents.
Having fun by the fire and talking to people.
I love it!

Several times! I even went backpacking! (multiday hike where you set up camp at different points on the trail)
Ultimately its a tight ship if you are there for all fun and no work its not quite for you; lots of housekeeping like cooking, cleaning, etc are still relevant chores and are the first to spoil a trip when left to gather.

All fun, zero work (except for the cook)

True that! (I enjoyed cooking too so that was its own sort of play in and of itself. )
but when operations get really big like in boyscouts ( the bulk, if not all of my camping exp) there are a lot of admin stuff like setting up flagpoles, cordoning off spaces for specific patrols, driving stakes, helping out the squirrel scouts ( basically the dumb rascals that blame everything on the older scouts because we said that they'd need to learn it eventually) and helping teach the normal younger scouts.
There is surprisingly a lot of ropework involved
as well as loading, unload equipment and coordinating stuff like opening an EZ-up for a kitchenspace.

Heh, I feel you.
Never was in the boyscouts (didn't have that when I was growing up).
I was looking for a pic, but I can't find it.
We were hiking up the biggest peak in Romania and I took a picture when being half up in snow, pointing at the sign.

Yes. My partner likes camping but it's too primitive for me. I like glamping though.
