How much influence and power do you think JYP, YG and SM still have over the company they used to lead?

  • Something I read in another thread, that I've been wondering about for a while too: people still act like a JYP, YG and SM still lead their companies.

But from what I read, all three haven't for years now.

Other people have become the CEO of the Big 3 companies. But tbh, I couldn't even name one of any of the CEO's. They're so low profile compared with how JYP, YG and SM used to profile themselves as figurehead and spokesperson for those companies.

So how is it now for real? Are they still the actual heads of their companies?

Do they still make all the main decisions, like is their say the final say in any situation and decision?

  • I don't think jyp makes every decision but the current CEO is his brother so I'm sure he still has some decent sway when it comes to certain things, especially music for certain groups since he's a producer.

  • i think they do control some aspects since most of them are probably a major shareholder of the labels

they probably have the final say over things like which fields the business should enter into (metaverse, nft), which markets to target for a particular grp etc., which companies to collaborate with stuff like that

depending on the group, they probably get to have the final say in the choice of the title tracks too

  • I don't think jyp makes every decision but the current CEO is his brother so I'm sure he still has some decent sway when it comes to certain things, especially music for certain groups since he's a producer.

I didn't know that! I thought JYP Entertainment had been taken over by another company.

So I guess it's the same situation as YG Entertainment, where YG's brother was the CEO for a couple of years, instead of YG?

  • They take a big part on deciding what type of songs thier idol groups release and it was proven many times through behind the scenes of mvs heck they even have a say on what type of hair cut their idol should have (Seulgi got her bangs cutout by SM himself)

Also small note when a thread is created and we write SM,YG,JYP most of the time we're referring to the company not the people

  • this came up in my timeline ;(^^

so i guess the answer is yes

  • I think LSM and JYP do have influence in that their suggestions are probably considered more heavily than others. YG possibly as well to a lesser extent. I feel like the company has tried to move away from him being the face of the company.

  • I think in LSM's case, he still has an influence in the artistic side of things but I don't think it's as decisive as some posters here make it sound. For example, I remember when Ryeowook released his The Little Prince album, he said that he sent a nearly finished copy to LSM to check it out and that the latter made some suggestions but Ryeowook declined them all. At the same time, Super Junior said that the hiphop break in the middle of House Party was suggested by LSM. So I guess it really depends on the song and the artist whether they agree to follow LSM's suggestions or not.

  • They definitely do have alot of sway

I remember Taemin has a huge conflicts with his team during the Move album

Everyone voted for rise to be title track but Taemin wanted Move

He talked to LSM, and one phone call from him shut the whole team up and they went with Move

Its kinda nice when he uses his pull to help the artist but he doesnt always use it that way

  • I found out JYP has control to approve songs he doesn't even have input on thanks to God's Menu and the members explaining about the behind the scenes.

They chose another song as Go Live's title track, but around 1 month before the comeback, they wanted to switch the song to God's Menu. They thought It would be impossible to get permission, because everything about the comeback was already done. They asked JYP and he loved God's Menu so much that he let the group release the song and re-record everything again.

This and I think it’s the fact LSM needs to approve of the final product even if he wasn’t involved. But the artists also need to approve his ideas from what I gathered.

Other times he isn’t involved in the production but eventually his confirmation is required. For example in DCT remake, Boa was talking to YYJ how she needs YYJ’s confirmation after she finishes the song and YYJ said he will also need LSM’s confirmation.

Another occasion where Boa said that when she is the artist and LSM is the producer/ceo, she reject songs he brings and always say she hate that or doesn’t want that etc..but when she became the producer herself she asks for LSM confirmation and sometimes get rejected.

So it’s a two way either the artists reject/accept LSM’s songs or make songs independently but eventually every song needs to get approved by him in the end.
