Korean charting is much more important than spotify and youtube for non big4 girlgroups

Example - Everglow and weeekly had successful song on yt and spotify but that didn't help them much in the end. No momentum was gained either. Tho Everglow was doing well on spotify and youtube till ladida but a huge decline in these platforms since then especially spotify. Weeekly spotify and youtube career ended with afterschool unless they recover. Album sales also not that great.

Stayc on the other hand keeps on gaining fans and having better growth. Korean popularity giving them more opportunity in hime country + international fans also checking them out because of it. Good charting has always attracted international stans. They still don't have songs as big as the other two on those platforms but they are showing much more growth.

I remember some people saying the same thing when i made a thread on weeekly amd how afterschool had barely any effect on them in the long run

  • Its beyond tragic how their latest comeback title couldn't even surpass 10M on Spotify and its been months. You would expect people to check them out but they are faceless group

I mean it’s like they were doing great before AS for a group like EG which had the international hype it could have helped them but for a group which doesn’t have a big fanbase and enough casuals listeners.

HP did better than Tag Me and Zig Zag so they slightly improved if you exclude AS.

  • I agree as long as that Korean charting leads to bigger album sales.

Korean streaming revenue i think is even worse than YT or Spotify (i THINK i read that somewhere, correct me if i'm wrong), charting high on Melon and Gaon is exciting for chart watchers like us but financially, wouldnt it be much better to have bigger streaming numbers on YT and Spotify in particular their premium services.

Afterschool was supposed to be the starting point tho. It was supposed to gain them fame and fandom but no one cared about the group.

  • That’s not true if you have a big fanbase you can bag cf and have solo gigs.

Loona popularity in Korea is inexistante and Chuu is really booked even Doyeon and naeun are quite popular with no big hits.

  • Hm but Brave Girls had a huge hit last year & it's like the world moved on. Sure their album sales improved but overall I don't think they're that good

Same for Momoland too actually. So I think it depends.

well but brave girls got cf after cf

so now even if their songs flops they'll get tons of cash because of all the brand deals they have

Brave girls got a whole new career where they could start earning because of rollin. The amount of cfs they bagged in one year. They are in a much better position than Everglow and weeekly.

Momoland i don't know what went wrong but with members leaving etc, the management itself was bad. They couldn't handle it.

It's possible that Korean charting doesn't bring much money directly, but leads to many commercial deals, ads, etc which is where the big money is.

  • Like I said they didn’t enough recognition and a big fanbase before AS so I don’t know why you expected to suddenly smash. That’s not how it works.

But AS was supposed to help them get there? You know like speeding the process. They did improve their sales but it's nothing to write home about. Maybe we'll see the progress with this new comeback.

  • You mean charting equally good in Youtube than melon? If you wanna chart on Youtube global rank 1, you usually need 30 - 50m views per week. That is pretty unlikely if you are not Blackpink or BTS

No. What i am saying is when it comes to fandom building, opportunities its better for non big4 ggs to have korean popularity than yt and spotify streams. The former has more security

  • Having a hit on melon would still be way more beneficial for any group because all the exposure that comes with it, that leads to CFS and being to do a lot of festivals and whatnot. From that popularity, you can branch to others areas like acting and variety shows a lot more easily.

Charting on YouTube/Spotify/Apple Music is definitely good, but outside Blackpink and BTS most groups won't be able to capitalize on this international popularity outside of concerts.

In the end of the day, Korea still is the most important market for any kpop group to have a long-lasting career.

  • You're right. I love how some int fans say that korean charting is unsteady and koreans always drop a group for the next big name and act how the same doesn't happen int fame wise. Groups like KARD and Everglow were hyped a lot at debut and the hype didn't translate into sales.

  • It's better to have international popularity imo but the problem is that if you're not popular in korea, it's gonna be hard to become popular internationally, so it's not realistic. People say everglow are popular internationally but even they aren't that popular. If they really were, they would sell more. That's why it's better for small companies to focus on korea more.
