The military court has reportedly reduced Seungri's sentence to 1.5 years in prison

  • "According to one exclusive media outlet report on January 27, the High Court of the South Korean Armed Forces has sentenced former Big Bang member Seungri to a reduced sentence of one year and 6 months in prison, during his final appeal trial which took place early this morning.

Back in August of 2021, the military court sentenced Seungri to a total of 3 years in prison, as well as a fine of approximately 1.156 billion KRW (~ $960,000 USD), for his 9 criminal charges including embezzlement, violation of food sanitation laws, sexual assault, illegal camera filming, solicitation of prostitution, habitual illegal gambling, illegal foreign monetary transfer, assault, etc.

Shortly after the court's initial sentencing, Seungri's legal representative filed for an appeal in October of 2021. The military prosecution also filed for an appeal, and as a result, Seungri's discharge from his mandatory military service duties were also delayed. Originally, if found innocent of his charges, Seungri would have been discharged from his duties on September 16, 2021.

According to the media outlet report above, Seungri's side admitted to all 9 of his criminal charges during the High Court's appeal hearing and submitted a statement of reflection for his wrongdoings. The High Court took into consideration that the defendant admitted to his charges and showed reflective behavior while adjusting the initial trial ruling.

Currently, Seungri is being housed in the ROK Military's Correctional Institution, or the equivalent of military prison.

If Seungri's side chooses to accept the High Court's appeal ruling, he is likely face imprisonment for approximately a year and 1 month, after taking into consideration that he has been held in custody for 5 months since the initial court ruling."

  • So they really aren’t reducing it, they’re just counting the time he was locked up prior to the trail as time served.

Anyway he’s trash, his fans are pathetic and delusional and quite frankly with 9 charges he should of had more time in prison but we already know how korea is.

  • Bad. Really bad.

im over it atp. like im tryna understand on what bases the appeal was accepted in the first place when everything he was sentenced and fined for was 100% deserved. and for something like he did i don't think admitting to those charges alone should be enough to reduce your sentence by half? like maybe a few months less yeah okay, but half of it off, idk.

This is the most infuriating part:

"and submitted a statement of reflection for his wrongdoings. The High Court took into consideration that the defendant admitted to his charges and showed reflective behavior while adjusting the initial trial ruling."

Who tf cares if he showed regrets? He should be locked up regardless. This trial is a big joke.

exactly. if you were proven guilty for it and admitted to it you absolutely have to own up to everything. especially in his case

  • Forget the rest of the sentence, give him a medal and a parade already. Clearly all the burning sun shit and his side dealings means jack all to Korean justice system. Some of his friends who are convicted rapists + more charges only received minor sentences as well (I think like 2 years). So much for justice. A simple “I’m sowwry :(“ is all it takes to get away with slap on the wrist.

It’s all a big joke and seungri is having the last laugh

  • considering even part of his accusations

he'd recieve 20+ years in a federal prison if that was the US.

    bribery, assault, pimping etc.

says a lot about the country and what's normalized if you think about it.

or this may very well be another example of what happens when you have enough money

What if that’s how he got such a pathetic sentence in the first place, essentially playing/threatening the system and cosying up with lawyers, police etc. There’s no other explanation how he can get an easier time than for example someone caught with freaking weed.

I guess there's redundancy in bigger countries lol the justice system prosecuting seungri has probably been corrupted already.

Very common to do even in the US.

Either way only 3 years for all those charges…. lmfao what a joke. He’ll never have a proper career or job as a convicted criminal so he might as well stay in prison.

Also lol’ing at “reflective behavior”. Lmfao he’s reflecting because he got caught. He’s not reflecting because what he did was wrong.

  • People in here act surprised because they seem to not know how this whole thing works.

In most countries, if you admit to your charges, they reduce your sentence. It’s a very common deal they make.

Does not necessarily mean the person really committed everything they got charged for (in general not about Seungri), but it’s the better option (for them) to get a lower sentence.

The whole point of prison is rehabilitation… re-educating and retraining those who committed a crime. You should realize and understand that your actions caused harm to the society and you should work on becoming a decent person again. You should use that time to reflect and repent. That’s why many prisoners leave prison earlier because of good behavior and the fact that they got rehabilitated. If there is no sign of rehabilitation or your crimes were way to barbaric, you will spend the full sentence in there or die in there

So back to Seungri. Him showing reflective behavior showed the court that he might be able to rehabilitate. It starts with admitting your wrongdoings. It also depends on the severeness of your crimes.

And of course they will take into account the time he has already spent in prison due to his pre-trial detention. This is a normal procedure and not something they did specifically for him. It’s the Law.

But even after his time in prison, he lost everything, he won’t be able to come back (hopefully), people will outcast him and he probably lost almost all of his social contacts. His punishment will continue even after the 1.5 years.

I don’t want to see his face or the others faces in media again. They should live a quiet private life and be slowly forgotten forever.

  • I think what people have a problem with is the fact he was charged and convicted of over 10 serious crimes yet only received 3 years and then only truly serving half of that in prison. Whereas other people have been convicted of one marijuana charge for 2 years.

Mind you one of Seungri’s conviction is a sexual assault and illegally filming women in the nude and sharing them to numerous people.

This just proves Korea’s justice system favors those who are wealthy and powerful. 3 years does not fit the multiple crimes he was convicted of and certainly does not fit the 1.5 years he actually served.

If we’re going to keep excusing famous criminals by saying they have reflected, then what’s the point of having a criminal justice system.

  • There's no way this pos isn't backed up by some powerful individuals, seeing his charges getting dropped one by one and getting away with crumbs is infuriating.

The sad part is he probably has enough money to live a comfortable life for the rest of his days. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years he'll show up his face on tv again like nothing happened.

While his female victims will live forever with the fact they were sexually assaulted and filmed for others to see. Disgusting.

  • He did not illegally filmed women, he received a video that contained illegal material and he didn’t reported it. So that makes him an accomplice because he was aware of what was going on … this act broke two laws, first sexual assault and illegally recording people without their consent (in general not just in a sexual way), that’s why they are separately mentioned here. Since he didn’t do it personally he got a lesser sentence for this compared to those who directly filmed and shared these videos. Plus he was part of that Group chat were they shared these videos but did not participated in the conversations or spreading of these videos…but again, he knew about it and didn’t reported it. The other charges weren’t that big of a crime and often end up with just paying a fine… the crimes that got the most focus was the prostitution and gambling charges.

The rich=guilty by default is misleading and not reality. Are wealthy and powerful people really favored by the Law or is the system more in their favor? These are two different things. The Law is the same for everyone, it’s just that the wealthy can afford the best defense team that are way better prepared than a state/public attorney.. when it comes to a trial the side ( defense or prosecution) that is better prepared will decide the outcome. State attorneys are often really poorly prepared cause they have to deal with tons of other cases and often suggest a deal rather than defending you as it goes faster. That’s why you see more convictions among those not that rich, especially the poor. Also they can pay a fine (which everyone will be offered too) while those who can’t afford to pay a fine will have to serve prison time.

Also there have been tons of extremely wealthy people who got high convictions and not even their best lawyer could get them out there. So they either the trial because there was enough evidence against them, or they accepted a deal ,which is provided to everyone, if the case doesn’t look like you will win) to receive a lesser sentence ( and many accept it). And in other cases wealthy people got away with their crime or lesser sentence because the prosecution was poorly prepared leaving the room for doubts. (OJ Simpson case)… and this happens to normal citizens as well. Many got away with crimes because of reasonable doubts.

What this whole incident actually shows is that they need a reform in their Law system with a proper ranking of crime severeness. It can’t be that smoking weed gets the same prison sentence as sexual assault/abuse.

Also wealthy people who are really being covered up won’t even get prosecuted in the first place. You won’t even see them having a trial, those are really the one in power. If you end being jailed than your connection or power wasn’t big enough.

  • If Seungri admitted to all 9 charges which are : "embezzlement, violation of food sanitation laws, sexual assault, illegal camera filming, solicitation of prostitution, habitual illegal gambling, illegal foreign monetary transfer, assault, etc."

Then why do his fans still claim he's innocent?
