Underage plastic surgery should be prohibited in K-Pop

  • The thing is plastic surgery in South Korea is pretty normalised in general and has been for a long time. It’s not just idols but regular people as well. I've seen people from other countries who go there to work as language tutors talk about middle school aged kids coming in with parts of their faces taped up. Eyes, noses and etc or taking time off to have work done as a gift from their parents.

The only thing that’s stopping it from being extremely common is the income. Do I agree with very young kids going under the knife? No. But it’s part of their culture and it’s not going to change.

That‘s the problem. It’s normalized and that’s why the government should do more safety measures in favor of the children and teenager. I was several times SK and it’s very obvious that ps is normalized which is not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion. It’s just that it is especially dangerous for teenager

  • Is it so widespread? How do people know for sure that an idol had plastic surgery? I guess double eyelid surgery and such are common because it's considered benign; but when it comes to heavier surgeries, how do the teens do? Their parents pay for it just because?

I don't know, I feel like sometimes dans call PS without any ground. There's already a lot one can do with makeup so I'm unsure that every enhancement in one's appearance is PS related.

  • There are people who get heavily bullied for their nose but when people who are already heavenly pretty get plastic surgery because of Lookism and pressure of society it’s too much

But that's also the thing and where it gets difficult to draw a line. Even those who are perceived as pretty by many have their insecurities. Everybody has. Their insecurities are just as legitimate as any other's.

It's just society that's fucked up, and everybody keeps feeding into the whole appearance issue in their own ways, some more than others. This issue won't change for a couple more decades, if not centuries (if we'll ever get that far, we might go extinct before that lmao).

Please read more about plastic surgery in Korea. There are a lot of documentation about it and it’s seriously like that. If you walk out of the normal Gangnam station that has tons of different exists with advertisements, almost 80% is about plastic surgery, just saying...

Agreed, it’s hard to draw a line. Imo, an adult that is old enough to know the consequences of PS should get the PS if they want to after a psychological assessment whether it is body dismorphia or whether a surgery would even satisfy the patient. I mentioned this one surgeon who is also a youtuber and he said that there are certain patients that would never be satisfied with the results and that have different problems which are the reason for their insecurities. It’s really complex but a few regulations would help a lot of teenagers or people who do irreversible procedures and live with a lot of malfunctions and complications. In Korea, they also often downplay those which is another topic

  • It shouldn't be allowed not only because of the dangers and informed consent issues, but it also can have unexpected negative outcomes because the idols aren't done growing.

Lookism is unfortunately pervasive in SK. I remember reading an article about people trying to change the standard of having to submit a photo with job applications.

Lookism is really bad that even as a foreigner it becomes undeniably obvious.

  • The odds of me listening to a song called 'Cosmetic Surgery' while reading this thread...

Spoiler alert: it's not really about cosmetic surgery.

  • I feel like minors should only be allowed to do very minor procedures.

And they should be doing it for themselves and not because their parents/others are forcing them to.

I have seen too many kids/teens being forced to do something because of their parents on big life decisions such as marriage, careers, etc.

  • Even if it's the minor's own decision, it shouldn't be done. It's not something that they'll know whether or not they want to keep in the long term, not to mention the health risks involved.

I understand the "as long as they're happy" argument, but whatever happened to embracing flaws and setting your own beauty standards? There's a lot of discussion about toxic beauty standards and how they affect people's mental health, but at the same time, plastic surgery is constantly being pushed, promoting these toxic beauty standards.

We want to put an end to colorism, but we're still okay with skin bleaching? Where do we draw the line?

This isn't something that happens in just South Korea either. It's happening in the West regarding other beauty standards. Plastic surgery should be normalized for grown adults who know what they want, not for teenagers with insecurities — and let's face it; every teenager has insecurities.

We shouldn't normalize the idea that someone is imperfect or incomplete until they get a cosmetic procedure.

  • Let's be honest, many people are insecure about their looks, especially in a very image-conscious society, so it's no wonder that PS has been normalized in some of them. But at that age most are at their peak of insecurity - having just been thrust into adulthood from being sheltered all their lives. And with the mixed bag of emotions that comes with that, insecurity being a very prevalent one, young people are also usually the most easily persuaded at that time in life.

An "instant" ticket to becoming gorgeous probably seems intoxicating to these young people and let us not forget that it is adults preying on that insecurity.

  • i think the only reason a minor should be getting PS is when they need it for their own health. undergoing minor things as well seem pointless to me because things change as you grow older and may develop naturally later on. so yeah, i do think it should be illegal- unless it affects your health badly.

  • i think underage plastic surgery should be illegal for all minors, everywhere (unless for medical reasons of course), there is no "but personal freedom!" argument when it comes to minors, just like minors can't get tattoos (although some countries let them with parent permission, but I'm still against), drink, or smoke. It's ill-advised to let people so young make permanent changes to their body and it pushes lookism on people so young.
