Underage plastic surgery should be prohibited in K-Pop

  • I won’t name the idol because it doesn’t matter since this idol is probably just one example of far more underage idols who are forced to go under surgery by their agency. The excuse of loosing weight or baby fat is starting to grow old. A lot of idols are having plastic surgery. Nothing wrong with having plastic surgery when your main money source are partially visuals. Getting plastic surgery shouldn’t necessarily be patronized - except when minors are forced by their agency to get plastic surgery.

While I have to admit the initial problem are not only the agencies but the parents as well but would write several books if I was talking about the negligence of idol/trainee parents in this industry in general, so let’s just start with this essay

It is just unbelievable how the industry is exploiting the insecurities of idols and use especially the trainees in a very vulnerable time of their life to indirectly or directly force them into taking a decision that could change their life for better or worse. Doing cosmetic procedures like fillers or botox are already very risky but invasive procedures like jaw shawing or nose jobs on pubescent persons are a type of dangerous that should not be taken lightly and it should quite franklynot be allowed. In formal, plastic surgeons are not allowed to work on teenager but in reality, we all know that with the power of certain industry player and I guess - a tons of money - formal boundaries are often intentionally ignored. It is already controversial that some adult idols or trainees are persuaded to do really invasive and irreversible procedures but it definitely goes overboard when not fully grown teenagers are exposed to such treatments. All in all, there should be more safety measures for teenage trainees and the risks of plastic surgery alone should be enlightened to the idols and their parents.

  • plastic surgery in general should only be for those who need it and not the norm

but hey, pretty much everyone seems to be doing it in kpop, hell I cant say for sure but plastic surgery seems normal among koreans in general these days, even underage ones so...... who knows if they're being forced or it just has become the industry norm, or worse, cultural norm

again, i dont claim to be confident about this stuff, just what i have gathered from the internet so far

ps was common in kpop for decades for sure but not nearly as extreme as you get today, and idols held on to their distinct features, good or bad

now no one looks bad but no one stands out either because of this phenomena

  • PS is very normalized in Korea. That’s true and I don’t have anything against PS (as mentioned) but PS is not just some magic tool where you go once under the knife and you look beautiful. The more invasive the procedure the more dangerous it gets. Jaw shawing can cause so many problems but it gets more and more popular. Also there are several more risks factors if you are not a fully

grown adult. That’s why PS should not be allowed for teenager who might not even be able to understand the severity of such a decision.

  • There are many things that should be prohibited in k-pop.

PS,dieting, rigorous training hours, and all other inhumane conditions that stem from power abuse of the higher-ups.

Not to be a Karen but istg there should be some kind of law that regulates the things that go down in these companies.

  • wait wait doesn't those plastic surgery operations ---

THey can go bad especially if the kid is too young.

Yep, or there could be risks that are unknown. The Brazilian Butt procedure is one of the most lethal procedure to exists due to unforeseen complications that could happen and this is the case for a lot procedures. Jaw shawing could end up in a numb face. It’s unbelievable what agencies and parents expect of their kids while completely disregarding the safety of their trainees or children

i mean if the internet is anyhting to go by, it seems common among normal korean teens too. That's even more absurd. Atleast for kpop idols there's a big reason being a competitive edge. Anyway its probably not gonna change ever and will only get worse and worse.

SK generally have a lot of issues with working conditions and the power play of higher ups. I would never send my child into such an environment. Not even if they want to become a singer.

Not related to my OP but: Korea has a very big problem with Lookism and inferiority complex. Korean instagram influencer use so much photoshop that it is ridiculous almost how much they use. A lot of them have very young followers. It’s very strange that people think that heavily photoshopped (more than the Kardashians) people are real or they use the “I only do makeup“ excuse

  • Maybe I'm blind or they're just nugu but I haven't noticed any underage idols with ps or at least noticeable ones :/

I agree with you though, but we shouldn't forget korea is known as the "world's capital of plastic surgery". Literally every person with a minor flaw is heading towards the salon with a picture of their favourite actor/singer as a reference in hand hoping the nose job will solve all their life problems.

I doubt parents will let their kids undergo an expensive and dangerous surgery just to be a kpop idol in an unnamed company if this wasn't pretty much the norm there. Everything in korea is about social status, beauty and perfection.

There are some 4th gen idols who have had a lot of plastic surgery even before they debuted and you see it even in some of their middle school (!!) photos.

I might do a thread later in the Lounge about this topic because the Korean or even Chinese social media influencer environment deserves one

    good luck

the moment one person comes in saying you're being plastic surgery-phobic another 10 will follow and before long you might regret it

  • agree. there's a certain idol who did double eyelid surgery, jaw shave, buckle fat removal, nose job and had lip fillers and they are still a minor.

i only blame parents, nobody else. they are the ones who give the consent to companies to do whatever they want with their child because they are fame and money hungry. law should protect the kids if parents don't care about them.

  • gotta say Identity crisis could also happen with plastic surgery unless its to correct a deformity.

There is this youtuber that is a plastic surgeon and I share his sentiment about it. For him, ps is the last resort. There are people who get heavily bullied for their nose but when people who are already heavenly pretty get plastic surgery because of Lookism and pressure of society it’s too much

  • The thing is plastic surgery in South Korea is pretty normalised in general and has been for a long time. It’s not just idols but regular people as well. I've seen people from other countries who go there to work as language tutors talk about middle school aged kids coming in with parts of their faces taped up. Eyes, noses and etc or taking time off to have work done as a gift from their parents.

The only thing that’s stopping it from being extremely common is the income. Do I agree with very young kids going under the knife? No. But it’s part of their culture and it’s not going to change.

  • It's way too ingrained into society as a whole, if 'normal' girls regularly get nosejobs and double eyelid surgery as sweet sixteen presents then there's no hope for celebrities. I believe it will get better eventually but it will be a decades long type overhaul (not including the can of worms that is colorism and the often unsafe or obsessive measures taken for it)
