Everglow Yiren's "Chinese greeting" controversy is causing further anger among Koreans.

On the 8th, Chinese state media 'Observer Network' published an article titled, "Chinese girl group idol Wang Yi-ren was scolded by Koreans for not kneeling for New Year greetings and told to "Go back to China."

They wrote, "Korean media reported on the scandal and said "Chinese traditions allow for bowing only to the heavens, earth and parents" but Koreans are in "denial" and won't accept it."

The media outlet then revealed that prior to "Yiren incident" other Chinese idols working in Korea also encountered a similar situation but because "kneeling is highest symbol of respect in China" the idols had to use other methods. The reporter then shared list of active idols to include GOT7 Jackson, EXO Tao, and 2 Seventeen members who used "other" methods to avoid a "deep bow" when they attended various Korean programs and retorted, "forcing someone to kneel is considered "shameful."

Chinese netizens who saw the article praised Yiren and stated, "Korea itself was a Chinese colony. The cultural traditions of colonies can be different however all slaves still had to get down on their knees."

Another netizen stated, "Korea has long been a vassal state of China so it's natural for Koreans to be "on their knees" so I don't understand why they're causing such a fuss now under guise of "etiquette."

  • it's a very tough situation. on the one hand they shouldn't be forced to bow as it's a very serious matter in their culture and is comparable to the issue of religious freedom, but then again it's a bit disrespectful if they just stand above everyone while everyone touches their forehead to the ground

  • This isn't about bowing. It's not about Yiren or any of the other idols.

It's about the painful history between Korea and China.

Koreans seem to feel like idols from foreign countries need to be washed of all of their own individual traditions in order to promote in Korea. More specifically China and Japan. If not, Korean nationalists will use the smallest thing to point the finger and say "See, see! This is why we shouldn't accept them."

Then, they wonder why the Chinese idols always end up leaving.

  • The comment about killing all the Chinese is incredibly disturbing. The epitome of, "well that escalated quickly." We were talking about bowing or not bowing and suddenly we're in Murderville.

Conversely, the Chinese comments about colonies and slaves being on their knees is also horrific because who the fuck even thinks like that and says that statement as if it's normal? Truly deranged.

These peoples surely did not learn history. During Joseon era, Ming and Joseon were besties and Ming helped Joseon to ward off Japanese intruders in exchange for trading interest. In a more recent time, the Japanese colonized Korea and enslave the Korean.

The Korean always negs if any foreign idol does not speak perfect Korean accent. Why do you think they will be not upset even if an American idol says Korean food is inferior to American one?

Conversely, the Chinese comments about colonies and slaves being on their knees is also horrific because who the fuck even thinks like that and says that statement as if it's normal? Truly deranged.

Are you sure they did not cherry pick some minority opinions to support their agenda?

  • This is ridiculous. I don't know what conflicts are going on between China and SK but quite frankly, that has nothing to do with the individual idol. India and Pakistan are sworn enemies but I still have friends who immigrated from Pakistan. An individual shouldn't be responsible for their countries actions unless they support it.

Now onto the actual issue of if they should bow or not. I don't think they should. Everyone has their own culture and they shouldn't be forced to change. I would not bow to my knees to wish people a happy new year. That's something I would only do in the temple to god or to receive prayers from my elders. I'm not even that religious but I just don't think it's appropriate because I equate getting on my knees to be a form of complete devotion.

If I say anything incorrect please correct me and I will edit my comment accordingly. I'm also very sarcastic so please don't take anything I say to heart.

Wow, I have no words. Really? These people are that immature. To be fair, I don't know the full context between Korea and China, so forgive me if I sound a bit ignorant in parts of this, but this entire thing is messed up. You don't just say stuff like that lightly under any circumstances. This is some of the most xenophobia I have seen in one place recently and it makes me mad. If you don't like a group of people, please try to find it in you to learn to see them more humanely or ignore them.

Also, two things to remember: 1) Many people had little to no control over their ancestors, especially if they weren't born yet, so if their ancestors did something bad, don't blame it on the current generation, especially if they've shown actual growth in that area and 2) Don't blame the civilians for the choices the government makes. Sometimes people hate the things the government does, but they are powerless to stop it and not everyone can afford to move to a better place with a government they like better. Once again, I hope I didn't misspeak or take something out of context or the wrong way, but from the comments and what I do know, these are some of my thoughts. Have a great day/night!

Thank you! I agree with pretty much everything you said here. I don't think I could have said it better myself. Have a great day/night!
