“Kpop is declining”

  • I hope anyone who says that is coming from a subjective point of view. Cuz you gotta be absolutely dumb to think it declining is even remotely true from an objective standpoint

Artist are getting more sales, downloads, views, tours, and more than ever before. Even the west is an open market for Kpop now when it wasn’t (really much of) one before

Like if you’re saying the music or members aren’t as good today as it was in the past then that’s one thing. Though I can easily disagree & say it’s better than it ever was, so there’s no actual fact on that

But if you’re trying to push it as a fact when numbers clearly contradict your stance, then…. Idk what to tell you

  • In the sense that it has become less Asian and more American in the last five years, yes. The "K" in "K-POP" is becoming superfluous.

Selling more albums by copying Western pop stars has a limit - eventually fans will just directly buy the Western albums, instead

I legitimately don't understand this argument. It's always been heavily influenced by Western pop. Like even back in the day Rain was just doing the same things Usher did 5 years before.

I think K-pop has a distinct style that American artists don't

, the group members are usually Korean/Asian

Also what western artists are they copying? :pepe-tea:

because fans buy for more than just that.

yeah, any "pop" is always influenced by people who have done it before.

doesn't mean fans will leave groups for such normal things.

  • Stock Market Cycles - Historical Chart | MacroTrends

I like to think of k-pop popularity as similar to how the stock market fluctuates.

It peakcs, crashes, and comes back up. Most of the time the next peak is larger than the last--historically.

    Example: SNSD to BP/Twice

SNSD had a huuuge peak, then there was a lack of popular GG imo

    Then TWICe revived GGs

    And BP became huge internationally

and their peak was larger than the last.

Similarly, In 2020 the stock market crashed.

    Now it's higher than ever.

Exactly. I think right now kpop is really offering up things that just aren't present in current pop music. Lush harmonies, high level choreography, even just the dynamic of a group recording... it's been a long, long since that was offered up in the current music scene at least in the US.

Like for me, who was a middle schooler during BSB/Nsync days, it's very nostalgic for me.

Kpop is inspired by Western Pop & Jpop tho, of course it’ll take a lot out of those, but with some unique elements it has for itself too

  • I mean, if you personally dislike the music, then that's one thing, but I do think the growth shows that the artists and the other people in the industry must be doing something right since it's appealing to many people.

At the end of the day, that will matter more to companies than a few people disliking their music or whatever.

  • I think the Western expansion of more than just BTS has started and will take a bigger hold if BTS stays around longer and other groups can capitalize upon the acceptance we're seeing. They are leading this Kpop explosion in the West now with BP having made a smaller but no less notable transition to a western market too. However IMO we're still at the beginning of the entrance of other kpop artists not named BTS and BP. Twice was hovering and entered the charts with The Feels. Daytime and late night shows are having more and more Kpop artists on them - I know AESPA was on the Kelly Clarkson show recently. It's gonna take time, but it's moving in the right direction. I don't see a decline.

ofc, ww domination is happening. ppl just blinding themselves

  • It's definitely not "declining" in the sense that people are losing interest or that groups aren't breaking records, but for me personally it's just not as fun anymore, I feel like all the good memes are still being made out of groups rookie content and I feel like in 2015-18 it was bop after bop after bop, while now there's only maybe 2 or 3 songs that get released that I genuinely like out of the entire year.

if we pray to naevis eveything will turn out fine :pepe-cross:

These groups like PrettyMuch, Why Don't We, and these smaller girl groups are NOT outdancing the average Kpop group.

Vocals are usually better since the west likes to focus on that more when it comes to groups, so they tone down the dancing in return.

I will say Kpop invests much more heavily in the visual side of thing, when it comes to music videos and emphasis on photocards and photobooks.

When it comes to stage presence, I won't speak since I don't watch these newer western pop groups.

  • You can say it's declining in South Korea but growing internationally.

Not necessarily. K-pop was at an all-time high in 2015-2018 in Korea, completely tanked in 2019, rose a little bit in 2020 and is making big waves again this year.

  • It's lways same old same old with some people. Kpop will always stay popular genre even without charting on billboard.

Even when kpop wasn't as global as today it had dedicated fanbases. For example even back in 2013 exo won over 1d. I don't see kpop declining but I hope western media will stop seeing it as some phenomenon. Yes, even music outside of America can be popular, moving on.

~ Retired exol, don't ask me about that group. ~
