In fact they would have probably hit 1 on Hot 100 even with a direct clash with Adele

Can't wait for the next comeback. Hoping UMG does better than CR did and gives BTS the treatment they deserve as the biggest act in the music industry.

Changed the title of the thread from “So its safe to say, that as things stand atm, BTS are head to head woth Adele” to “So its safe to say, that as things stand atm, BTS are head to head with Adele”.
  • They're the biggest group in the world, one of the top artists in the world period. They were literally the best selling artists in the world last year. They are A+ list. I've been a fan for almost 5 years and every year the growth has just been amazing.

  • This has been true since last year, but there is not currently a recording artist/act who is more popular than BTS globally. They are absolutely at the top right now, and are most likely going to cement themselves as one of the top acts of all time as time goes on as well.

    This.

  • Adele is a talent but her music escapes me. It all sounds similar.

Yeah - I think her voice is incredible, but she’s always left me a bit cold - probably for the same reason.

Anyway, she’s undeniably hugely popular, wildly successful, and the biggest individual artist of recent years. Her latest single has been anticipated for such a long time, I genuinely thought it might surpass Butter but…

Gets harder and harder for people to deny the power BTS holds currently, doesn’t it!?

  • what about ULs tho? It doesn't surprise me too much because Armys are mass streaming right? Adele's fanbase are a lot older and it wouldn't surprise me if a good chunk of them don't even stream. I'm curious to see what her album sales will look like compared to theirs.

Yup, ARMY is so huge and scattered all over the world now that it can even compete with Adele. Wow, just amazing.

This is the only data we have, and it is across streaming platforms globally. Mass streams are filtered by both YT and Spotify, so no its not cause of mass streaming.

You will get the album data soon, her album is out in Nov

  • what surprised me was adele breaking all records after 6 years

Also about the streams as well, BTS actually is at a slight disadvantage since Global 200 basically only uses western centric streaming services (Spotify/AM) and downweighs YT a ton (ie the one big streaming service that is big throughout a ton of Asia).

Like the Billboard Global 200 Streaming numbers don't even include the biggest streaming services in some of BTSs main markets (eg Melon, Genie, Line Music, etc)

And BTS still rules, its funny the way Kpoppies will keep being dismissive.

She is back after 6 years, ofc she is going to break records. How is that surprising? She is the biggest soloist of the last 20 years.

    It's not a surprise. She's The Adele🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏿

  • I mean, we all know what the point of it is. Lool

Yup like lets be honest. many people were expecting her to easily break most if not all of BTS's records.

She did break a ton of records and she is a music industry powerhouse. Her comeback was super super successful and her album is likely going to break millions and millions more records!!

But one think it really showed me is that people did underestimate BTS's numbers mainly due to the amount of downplaying there has been over the entire of 2020 and 2021 by western stans etc....

Also one thing I want to mention is we hadn't seen Adele's numbers in the new streaming age. So her cb clearly showed the clear shift from sales to streams, where she sold over 1M digital sales for Hello first week to under 100k for Easy On Me.

And to me it also proves just how big BTSs buying power really is and before people bring up website sales, i'd like to remind you that Blue & Grey which was a bside with no website sales sold 69k digtial sales in the US in it's debut week. And on the Global 200 side which doesn't include website sales. BTS holds the top 2 biggest sales weeks globally and again that's without local korean platforms (or some of their other big market platforms like JPN).

Also globally I think people underestimate how beneficial it is to have Japan under your belt. BTS's dominance in japan has proved to benefit them greatly.

  • Well let BTS have Japan and other Kpop groups can have China.

  • I still really think a lot of you non ARMY guys are underestimating how much of ARMY now is older.

I think a lot of what makes both Adele and Bangtan so phenomenally popular and successful is that their music doesn’t just seem to target or reach one age group or demographic - the reach stretched really wide and far.

Due to how vocal a chunk of ARMYs are about streaming on social media, mainly Twitter, I know a lot of non-fans think majority of us just sit at home without a job or class to attend so we can stream BTS 24/7.

The reality is that most of us listen to them only once or a few times a day along with other artists’ music, and many of us grew up with them, have jobs and other real life commitments to attend to. We don’t have time to stream all day. Most of us are not the “brainless” 12-year-old teeny boppers they like to think we are.

Just look at their Korean listener demographics. Their top 3 age groups are in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

The fastest growing age group of new ARMY in the last year or so seems to be older fans as far as I can see. Even my forty two year old brother who has been making fun of me for years for liking K pop texted me the other day to say how much he loves My Universe…
