Sorry But I Think Korean Entertainment Should Follow China In This

  • The Chinese government plans to ward off "irrational idol worshipping," citing the recent fall of Kris Wu

The Chinese authorities are strengthening their management and watch over the celebrity fandoms in China.

The Global Times writes, "The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) published a notice on Friday on its website asking provincial offices to heighten the efforts to rectify the fan circle chaos and make entertainment-related platforms perform their duties to ward off irrational idol worshipping... tackling the long-controversial moves by teenage fans that blindly idolize celebrities, excessively spend money on their 'idols,' and exclude others, as distorted values within the circles have also bred cyberbullying and illegal fundraising."

According to the new plan, the release of celebrity popularity charts will be banned, and minors will also be restricted from spending money to support celebrities. In particular, celebrity fan clubs are prohibited from swearing or spreading false rumors online. Online platforms that do not properly manage these fandoms will be punished.

In addition, entertainment agencies will be responsible to lead the fan clubs properly. A pay-per-vote system on entertainment programs is prohibited. Any of the entertainment programs should not encourage fans to spend money on celebrity-related products.

Analysts state that China has recently stepped up its crackdown on pop culture because fan clubs have emerged as a social problem. These fandoms rise against each other, arguing and criticizing each other. In addition, these fandoms spend a lot of money on idol competition programs for their favorite stars.

Recently, Zhao Liying's fan club attacked Wang Yibo online on the news that the popular actor Zhao Liying will appear in a drama with Wang Yibo. More than 2,000 related accounts were closed on China's social media Weibo on the 25th.

Moreover, earlier in May of this year, fans bought a large amount of milk to give multiple votes to their favorite idol contestants in 'Youth With You - Season 3.' This led to a huge waste in perfectly fine milk, as the fans only needed the bottle to send in their votes. Therefore, China went on to ban idol survival shows.

These are not the only buzz coming from the Chinese entertainment industry recently.

The Chinese boy group called 'Panda Boys' was disbanded in just five days after their debut as they face criticisms of child exploitation. The boy group's average age was 8 years old, with the oldest member being 11 years old and the youngest member being only 7 years old, leading to the controversy. A Chinese Central broadcast CCTV stated in a commentary, "We should not make children debut before they are able to find their own path in life."

The Global Times also cited Kris Wu's recent downfall, writing, "A recent exposure of fan circle culture was the fall of pop star Kris Wu Yifan, who was in late July accused by some women of underage rape and sexual assault. Some of Wu's fans cyberbullied those women and netizens who voiced support to those women.

After police started investigations and detained Wu for suspected rape, some fans continued to blindly defend him, even saying they would risk breaking into jail to rescue Wu.

A viral screenshot showed an alleged fan of Wu stating, 'there are only about 2 million People's Liberation Army soldiers and about 2.5 million policemen in China, but Wu has 50 million followers on Weibo, we certainly could rescue him out of jail.'

Wu was involved in a sexual scandal a few years ago, but a fan of Wu with the web name of 'Righteousness' always believed that the disputes were out of a romantic relationship. The fan told the Global Times that her nine-year affection for the idol, and the time, money and emotions spent on him suddenly became a joke after Wu was proven to be a suspected criminal.

Another fan of Wu said, 'I didn't believe it and thought he was framed until he was sent to prison. Now I feel disgusted.'

Fans groups were such an enclosed circle that any doubts or different views about the idol are not permitted. Young fans receive a single narrative and believe their idol is perfect, hence dedicating their time and money to defend 'the perfection.'"

  • I get where you’re coming from, but this is anti-freedom & not good for the most part

China is a dictatorship (not NK level, but still pretty strict), so not exactly anything to look up to

Blind defending teens aren’t exactly on my preferred list either. However they have the right to invest in their idols as much as they please, so long as they’re not hurting anyone or breaking any laws

The idea of having CCP level censorship towards that doesn’t rub me the right way

I agree, everyone should have the freedom to waste their money on what they want.

But I don't think it's a bad idea to punish fandoms from spreading lies and false rumors. And to point companies also are responsible for fandoms fights, because a lot of them are encouraged by them.

We've seen a lot of made up scandals that are a pain in the ass for everyone and are just an excuse to fight and attack idols to try to hurt their popularity.

  • I do agree with some of it... specifically rejecting stalking and saesang behavior and fan communities attacking each other.

  • that's exactly what i came here to say.

they're using this an opportunity to disguise their true intentions... and its pretty obvious :|

but regardless of their intentions, it is nice that they're taking matters of excessiveness in their own hands

The above are the only parts I agree with, some of the other stuff sounds a little extreme. Fans should be prohibited from making up false rumours with malicious intent, online platforms should be making more of an effort to crack down on psychopathic stalker behaviour, entertainment agencies should be doing more to call out obsessive fans instead of encouraging parasocial delulu relationships and there should be more protection offered to idols who enter into the kpop world at such a young age.

Never thought the day would come where I’d agree with the Chinese government about something :pepe-back-away:

  • Let’s be very clear China has a different agenda in doing this.

They don’t won’t idols having more influence than the CCP itself. Anything that could be seen as a threat to the system has to be taking out.

    That's also true.

Right now they are doing a clean up in their entertainment industry. After seeing idols and actors have more influence than them, they've literally say it, they are punishing every one that has some criminal record, from rape, sexual harassement, taux fraud, someones we don't even know what the've done, and they are deleting official weibo accounts, fandom weibo accouns and even dramas where they acted.

  • They were pushing against idols for a long time.

    Yup ...

    The list is long

    • Banning certain foreign artists so people in China can't listen to their music
    • Randomly censoring men, especially celebrity who wear earrings on TV since its aparently inapropriate even tho a study showed that 10% of all men in China have pierced ears nowadays
    • Making celebrity in bad situations feel helpless (example the scandal involving the boygroup Mr. Tyger who reached out to the public and not a single Chinese citizen wanted to help these dudes and they just blamed the boys for "it's their own fault that they ended up like that. And also we Chinese citizen shouldn't help cause it is as it is sometimes..." And yes this was a real answer of some Chinese people as they got asked what they think on not helping people like that boygroup when someone is in need of help... The goverment and some outdated old traditions in China act like if it was so importaint to care for their own family, but as soon its a stranger they all shut off and ignore it ... thats bad ...)
    • Putting child-idols on TV like if they should work for the adult-entertainment wich is disgusting (example the girlgroup called "Mini girls" who debuted in 2016 as the girls were only (!!!!) 4-6 years old forcing them to dance in tiny skirts in front of only adult-people (mainly adult-idols) and these girls even covered a way to sexy dance of a SISTAR-song that involved twerking (or better said excessively shaking your booty) ...yikes)
    • Banning survival shows and a lot other entertainment shows so those shows involving idols who want to be still able to be aired have to change themself into other subjects like becoming a talk show as example to be even able to show idols on TV
    • Banning historical-themed drama from TV so people can only watch it on specific websites in China only and not all people in China who have internet can even access those sides (and yes, all new historical dramas made after 2018 in China that you see online are mostly hardly watched in China since its not so easy for people to get access to them anymore)

I could name so much more things

    A.C.E | ATEEZ | DRIPPIN| MCND | NU'EST | ONF | SF9 | Stray Kids | TFN

  • Kpop and Korea is democracy environment. Not you brings CCP propaganda into this. Government love to target things they can’t control but the whole country depends on market demanding.

  • Yup ...

Didn’t they also censored lgbtqia+ content from tv and drama, turning BL novels into bromance.
