Why did Lovelyz fail to succeed like Oh My Girl despite having many similarities?

  • Debuting within 5 months of each other, both girl groups started with 8 members, both have a gentle and innocent image, not sexy, not tough, not girl crush. They both have vocal talents and have some visuals that even non-fans know. Both participated in Queendom with equal chance to break out. So why did one fade even further into obscurity while the other became the break through girl group of the following year? Is it because one has the IT factor while the other doesn’t, or because one has more charms and more attractive personalities than the other, or is it all just down to luck?

  • If we go with member to member comparison then I think that OMG have much more to offer and more OMG members stand out in their own way.

Even if you would put just OMG members in one line all of them visually and "mentally" lol are different.

  • woolim is a bad company. its that simple. they didn't capitalize off of ah choo which is to this day lovelyz' biggest song and then they ruined their music which tanked their fandom. lovelyz members also get into so many personality controversies so they're not well liked by non fans

  • One reason: their company.

When they blew up with Ah-Choo (it was one of the most popular idol songs of the year), the company didn't leverage the song's popularity nor did they try to let the public know that the song was Lovelyz's. It was a song that got 2 million + downloads on Melon which isn't an easy feat and Woollim did nothing.

Re: Queendom, Lovelyz have themselves to blame for their first two stages being pretty low quality. However, Woollim also didn't capitalize on their Queendom popularity. They gave them one comeback months later and nothing since then.

Kei, Yein, Jisoo, Soojung have all gone viral at some point, so it's not about the members. Mijoo is still super popular.

One thing though, Lovelyz's album sales are still really good, they have a good enough fandom.

  • Queendom.

OMG was able to put out two incredible performances back to back that stunned viewers with energy and uniqueness.

Going into the show Lovelyz was considered a higher ranking group even if only slightly. Coming out of Queendom OMG's performances on the show were the talk of Korea and had propelled them up to Mamamoo levels of fame. After the show OMG didn't just elevate themselves up in their own tier but changed tier groups. They had not just great songs but great concepts changes, great usage of stage lighting, great story telling, and great execution of the songs that really tapped into the psyche of the Korean GP.
