It actually counts like this when 3rd gen start but now it seems changed. I don't know specifically how they count the gen.

2nd gen idols: born in late 80s/early 90s
3rd gen idols: born in late 90s/early 00s
4th gen idols: will be born in late 00s/early 10s
So there you have it. 4th gen is a conspiracy theory.

While the whole generation thing in k-pop is confusing to me, choosing decades when idols were born is arbitrary.
As a casual observer, I'd propose that a new generation starts when there is a reasonably big shift in the industry. It could be music, choreo, or even the way that k-pop is targeting overseas markets now.
But, that's something that usually gets decided by historians after the fact. I doubt idols care about this, why should you?
