If you could only choose one song by an idol group that best represents them, which would you choose?

  • I'm going to stick to my ultimate favs here.

Mamamoo was a lot harder for me, due to sheer song count, but....

    Mamamoo:

    Reasons:

Seems like the best combination of all the things Mamamoo became famous for--ridiculous vocals, versatile concept, incredible energy, sexy but mature vibes. It's not even a top 5 Mamamoo song for me, but it's a great representative for them. You will not come away from an Egotistic performance not knowing what Mamamoo is all about.

If not Egotistic, I'd choose Um Oh Ah Yeah.

    NewJeans was easy.

    Reasons:

I have introduced many to NewJeans through the best K-Pop song of the decade. The y2k aesthetics, the addictive choreography, the chorus, the soft vocals, absent any screechy high notes or mandatory raps--this song will always be THE NewJeans song for me. The essence of the group and even individual members are layered all throughout this song and its many MVs.

  • Must be God's Menu. It changed the trajectory of their career. It was clear they had found their identity, even the members themselves say this . It's what people think of when they hear SKZ, it's their signature.

It was with this media started using "mala-taste genre" to describe them, and they really embraced their "noisy" music confidently. It's bold, loud, rap-heavy with a melodic pre-chorus, and smart utilization of member's voices. It's also just their breakthrough and to this day one of their biggest songs. Sometimes I wonder what it'd look like back then if they didn't change the title track last minute to God's Menu. :/

It's very in-your-face and unapologetic in what it aims to be, which sums up SKZ's brand in general.

Reason: Showcases their energy. Their "sexy" vibes are combined with fun and aesthetics, just like the group. It is serious for them but also unserious, the perfect mix of humor and passion.

  • Since people already posted for NewJeans and Stray Kids — and I agree with the choices — I will post for my other faves.

An easy choice for me. ITZY became popular with their named Teen Crush concept with lyrics about self-confidence and performatic songs that demanded intense choreographies and they delivered. I think Wannabe embodies It the best, since It was has their most well known and viral dance moves.

Now It's more complex, because EXO is not a group with one face, but rather a fusion of usage of a creative direction, sensuality, fun and powerhouse vocals. Choosing a single song to "represent" them means finding one that sits at the intersection of all those facets, instead of just highlighting one.

I can make an argument Growl, for example, but Tempo feels like their musical DNA distilled, as It has the R&B sensuality, funky playfulness and jaw-dropping vocals all in one. It's also hard to cover, because not everyone can pull It off.

  • I like to imagine life is a bit more aesthetically pleasing than the reality:

  • This are the songs that best represent their sound and their lore/concept in my opinion.

NewJeans: young teenagers having fun and in search of themselves, slice of life, coming of age, girlhood, nostalgic, emotional, alt influences

or Supershy more purely sonically (sweet pop, drum and bass etc) , also ASAP as well more concept wise/lore but also sonically because they are so unapologically alt

aespa: PERFECT and easy choice of their representative song both sonic and concept wise, it's fresh, fun, ufo y, empaworing, unique, a national hit (for many people Supernova = aespa and aespa = Supernova)

or Next Level which is more bold and explorative (another perfectly representative song both musically and conceptually), plus Armaggedon I would stay specially concept and lore wise cause I think their lore is REALLY well showcased in that song

    Red Velvet:

I think it's the first RV song that made me think: THIS is really Red Velvet, and nobody but them could do that song! Specially as an sm gg, cause some of their song reminded me of fx (Russian Roulette, Peek a boo), some of them SNSD (some of their bsides, Power up etc) but THIS song, it was 100% Red Velvet and specially their Velvet side, THE perfect red VELVET. There are also some witch/cult lore in this concept, specially in the artwork which is also so Red Velvet in my opinion

and Red Flavor to obviously, really embodies their fresh and cute but crazy, chaotic artsy concept well; I would also add Cosmic maybe specially all that dark culty murderous movie reference, I could have added Peek a boo for the spooky vibes and same sweet psycho killers but somehow Cosmic 'sounds' more like a RV song, meaning more pop/dance and nostalgic/emotional.

  • Tempo is not my favorite EXO song (or really even close to it, altho I still like it a lot), but it immediately came to my mind as the song that best represents them too.
