How you rate a song?

  • How you rate a song? 17

    1. Song first than the MV (10) 59%
    2. No MV (5) 29%
    3. Combined (2) 12%
    4. MV only (0) 0%

I've seen people judging songs based on the MV! So, let's do a poll, because I'm curious!

    Explanation for the poll!

    1. MV only: You rate it after you watched the MV
    2. Song first than the MV: You only rate the song, but you're watching the MV as well
    3. Combined: You rate both as whole
    4. No MV: You don't watch the MV, only care about the song

  • I listen to the song and if I don't like it, takes me a looooooong while to actually like it

my case rn w Walkin' on Water by skz cause I'm sorry I'm a STAY but that song IS NOT IT for me and the MV is kinda meh but imma see them in June so I need to gaslight myself into liking it lol

unless the MV is super pretty to which I forget me not liking the song and enjoy pretty video

  • I can’t remember the last time I watched an MV. Wait do ppl really still do that lol?

I may watch a few performance videos if the choreo is interesting, but the MV I almost never watch.

Only listen to the song. I don't find MVs too interesting to care to watch them.

I watch every MV, but only after the song! I don't really care about the MV, unless it's a cinematic one, like it's actually telling a real story.

Like IU - 'Love Wins All', or the latest one, Young Posse - 'COLD'.

To be fair, if someone start with an MV like 'COLD' they're not gonna like the song that much, because it has 2 pauses for in-between scenes without any music. Now, if you start with that, it's gonna ruin the song for sure.

Also, sometimes agencies tend to do a remix for MV's, like RBW did for MAMAMOO - ILLELLA, but that wasn't in the original song, and it was weird.

  • My order is

    Music > Vocals > Lyrics > MV

MVs can be fun. But they are just bonus, even the best MV, I would not watch for more than couple of times. Even bad MVs can't ruin a good song.

However bad lyrics can spoil a good song for me and bad singing of course.

  • I feel like a good song can be elevated even further by a good MV. But a bad song is bad regardless of how good the MV is. Likewise, a good song cannot fix a bad MV. So although I really enjoy MVs, they are not necessary I guess.

  • Story MVs can be fun, but I'm not saving a video to watch later. I'm saving songs, so I don't really give them much thought. Like, it's not the MTV days anymore lol

I mean, I rarely watch MV's more than twice, so yeah. If I have to, I only do it, because I'm actually writing about it.

  • well if it's just an audio release, then it's the voice (tone, emotions, musicality) and the lyrics first and then the melodie. but if it's an mv then my first impression/focus is about the aestethics and then music. but in the end it's kind of a mix of both with a visual lead.

for example lately i've been listening to a luna sea song and it sounds so good by itself but it's also an ost and when i listen to it during the story with the storyline and the visual aspect then the experience is like so hightened.

visuals matter a lot to me i guess. but generally if it's not supported by great vocals and good music then it doesn't leaves a lasting impact on me. i tend to forget it, or overlook the song.

for example lately, kiiikiii's i do me had a quite pleasant mv but i didn't enjoy the voices and the music was mid so even thought i watched the mv around 3 times, i'm probably never doing it again and i havent even properly listened to the song on spotify.

ps: i want to mention that that's the way i feel about kpop specially, when it comes to western artists, i barely watch their mvs or stuff like that, i just generally listen to their music/albums
