A lot of K-pop fans don’t like it when idols brag in their raps

  • That’s something I observed. It puts a target on their backs.

I think those lyrics are harmless, but a lot of K-pop fans can’t stand it for some reason. They have a strong aversion to the braggadocio often found in hip hop. I’m referring to both I-fans and K-fans.

This is my theory on why the rappers of groups seem to get the most hate. Examples: Jennie, Lisa, RM, Suga, G-Dragon, T.O.P, Soyeon

There’s a certain cockiness to their swag, and a lot of K-pop fans can’t stand that because they expect idols to be perfect, cute, and humble all the time. These rappers I mentioned are humble, but it seems like people just can’t get over the wordplay and the on-screen persona.

  • I don't follow a lot of rappers in Kpop because I do dislike it when they brag. The only one I follow is Soyeon, and when she brags, I think, "slaaay." She produces a lot of her songs, and most of which I find good. She has something to show for it.

Meanwhile, others don't. While they are amazing performers and talented people, a lot of their things are handed down to them or a given. I don't mind hip-hop rappers because they rap about their experience and brag about how they got out of poverty, gangs, etc. Most of them started from the bottom-up (under-dog story). Kpop has these pretty faces who are rich and come from well known companies, then they start bragging...okay.

I do avoid certain rappers in hip hop as well.

TLDR: If you're gonna brag, make sure it wasn't handed down to you (ie, you're not rich, you don't have pretty privilege, are self-made, or have an under-dog story). No one likes to hear the privilege brag.

  • Yes, I noticed this, but at the same time a lot of people like their idols bragging. I for one don't like brags that are not true. When groups full of debt brag of richness, when groups or idols rap pre-written lyrics, when idols controlled by their company brag about freedom, when people brag about being a fashion icon but not taking part in fashion. I don't hate them but I dislike these brags of nothingness or lies. And I don't like rapping when it's done just for trends. I don't know how to react when a group debutes and they already rap about being icons and leaders. Like. Be for real. You don't even have a fandom yet. Brag about wishes and dreams if you will, just be real. I don't like to stan illusions.

  • And some people just can't accept their success. They don't like to hear them being proud for they want them to be miserable.

  • I'm one of them, rappers who brag and haven't even written their lyrics is laughable. And then the kids bragging, babymonster, is just cringe AF, like what are you bragging about, that your parents pay everything for you, okay, go on, but it's just ridiculous.

  • And some people just can't accept their success. They don't like to hear them being proud for they want them to be miserable.

Yup! I think GD, T.O.P, RM, Suga, J-Hope, and Soyeon in particular paved the way for that style of rapping. I mentioned them because they write their own lyrics.

A lot of K-pop fans can't stand it because they don't understand hip hop's essence of bragging about victory amidst adversity, but essentially, it's supposed to be positive and inspirational lyricism. It just comes with the territory.

  • I'm one of them, rappers who brag and haven't even written their lyrics is laughable. And then the kids bragging, babymonster, is just cringe AF, like what are you bragging about, that your parents pay everything for you, okay, go on, but it's just ridiculous.

I think it's just all in good fun, so I actually like it. But I see where you're coming from with that.

When I was a teenager, some of my peers rapped about swag and whatnot, and it was just always meant to be fun. So it's not too out of the ordinary to hear kids bragging. I wrote some too, but I mainly stuck to writing about hardships and things I dealt with.

  • That is my impression as well.

Artistry is not necessarily their personal experience or personality - unless one is Taylor Swift, idols are not constantly falling in love and breaking up, to sing so many songs about it.

So even their other songs - they are acting the emotion.

But somehow rappers, when they take "bragging" /"Fcuk you"/ "I don't care" attitude, that even if they are still only acting, it still rubs wrong.

Still, I think it should be that way, like "villains" are successful only if they evoke dislike, rappers are successful only if their braggadocio/swag, irritates people.

  • It's not just about bragging its just that most "rappers" in kpop are cringe with it.

And that's all I'm gonna say because I can't elaborate on my opinions without using examples which will be deemed as hateful speech. :exit-pepe:

    Elaborate! Incriminate yourself!

  • This is my theory on why the rappers of groups seem to get the most hate. Examples: Jennie, Lisa, RM, Suga, G-Dragon, T.O.P, Soyeon

If your going to brag in your rap at least be the one to fucking write it.

How you thought it was a good idea to put Jennie and Lisa with the rest of those rappers is beyond me.

Jennie and Lisa's raps in Blackpink generally fit the style of "I'm rich and wear fashion labels" , whilst not writing the damn rap , and to me that's completely different (and far cringier) then stuff like Suga and RM where they brag about their personal achievements, or Soyeon bragging about her group etc. Not saying sometimes Suga and Soyeon have not bragged about being rich, but it wasn't all the time, and more importantly, they wrote their own lyrics.

How on earth can you brag with something written by someone else is beyond me entirely.

Just because they all brag doesn't mean all are treated equally, because the way they brag is very different.

  • Jennie has some written credits in songs just not rap lyrics but there is a reason for it. Blackpink raps are in English (usually) and English is not their native language so they had a designated writer for it. I'm looking at you Bekuh? lol I think she left already lol

Jennie ( along with Lisa) wrote the rap part for sure thing tho ( it was a cover song) and for the remix of solo in concert ( not sure if it's that one) but she did have one. So for blackpink's case imo it kind of makes sense I personally would prefer they rap all in Korean. I almost forget she co-wrote Mantra but her solo stuff isn't under YG.

also we don't know for sure if they didn't give any input about the content of the lyrics? lol so maybe the "I'm rich and wear fashion labels" is their own idea given that they have openly have said they give inputs and ideas in terms of concepts etc they have been getting more involved in the last few years.

  • Elaborate! Incriminate yourself!

Well idk. It's just a personal preference, tbh. I like to listen to music that is relatable on some level. Rapping about bagging the latest Chanel product is not relatable and can come across as flexing and just entitled privileges.

It's similar to the problem I have with Jennie's Mantra (don't shoot, please :holding-back-tears: ). It's not a bad song but, a conventionally attractive person with an ideal body, singing/rapping about a "pretty girl mantra" in today's society where there are only certain people considered "pretty" based on absolutely bullshit and sometimes unhealthy standards, can come off as being highly insensitive.

It's like screaming in our faces "I'm pretty and you wish you were."

I like that the song empowers people, women specifically but I think it should've focused less on the "pretty" girl mantra and more on the "I should be my own standard" girl mantra because not everyone is considered pretty by society's standards and most often, the norms have in some way, managed to warp our self-perception.

So in conclusion, a good rap has to be a mix of technical skills but also a message behind the rap that can appeal to everyone across a variety of demographics.

I'll probably receive all sorts of labels for saying this, especially while being a male, but I said what I said and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has thought this.

Mantra is still a banger though.

  • It’s why they’re called “idols” Kpop fans idolize them they’re not just “entertainers”

Regular people enjoy “personas” and “larger than life” personalities just for entertainment. Which is why controversial personalizes often get popular too.

  • Jennie has some written credits in songs just not rap lyrics but there is a reason for it. Blackpink raps are in English (usually) and English is not their native language so they had a designated writer for it. I'm looking at you Bekuh? lol I think she left already lol

So? The point is it's still not them. Everytime people go about any idol they go "they didn't do X because of Y" and it's like... so you agree, they didn't do X? The reasons are immaterial to the point.

Rap Lyrics from their 2022 song (written by Teddy Park and Danny Chung) -

This the life of a vandal, masked up and I'm still in CELINE

Designer crimes or it wouldn't be me, ooh

Diamonds shining, drive in silence, I don't mind it, I'm riding

Flying private side by side with the pilot up in the sky

Name dropping a fashion label (and wearing designer clothes) and that they get to fly private, not written by them. Bragging about this sort of stuff and not even writing it? Yeah that rap is pretty poor. There's not a single line in the raps that is about what THEY do, what they have done, it's about what they HAVE, what they own, what privileges they have.

Soyeon rap (i tried to pick the most overt commercial song she did, which was the Dolce and Gabbana song she was on, to attempt to keep it fair about fashion label stuff) New Vision -

    This is translated some parts.

Yuh, I know, I know art is not a competition

Yuh, I'll tell you the value of my work, reason

Among the same old it's a new colour, new vision

As if influenced by the whole universe

The subtle sense of the song is like aurora

    I got a new wave, I'm coarse & dolce

    Grab and swallow it all

I'm tipsy you can't catch me

    Let it all be smashed

    I got a tongue like a chain

    Idle is my masterpiece

Even if I spit out anything

    This is my vision, ayy

Her lyrics, on a fashion label song, she spends the time bragging about HER, and what she does and what she is doing, not what she owns, or what privileges she has.

    See the difference?

The raps are cringy because they're having 30 year old male write about how they (Jennie and Lisa) are cool girls and shit. Beyond parody.

And I'd be fine with honestly and let it sail by if the OP didn't put people who, according to you nebulously and vaguely "helped with input into concepts" compared to people like RM, G-Dragon, Suga and Soyeon in the same sentence.

Soyeon who writes every title track, develops and leads every creative concept for the comeback, whose literally the Executive producer of her Group is compared in the same way to Jennie and Lisa, who have sometimes said they wanted this or that? Please.

I don't think i even need to explain RM/Suga or G-dragon. T.O.P who was an underground rapper and always wrote his own stuff too.

I don't even dislike Lisa and Jennie, but it just is the height of ludicrous suspension of disbelief to put Jennie and Lisa alongside all those other rappers in anyway, shape or form, about the topic at hand.

Bragging raps are fine, but have at least even an ounce of credibility in your bragging rap.

Mantra is at least a foot in the direction.

  • How are you able to sum up your points so intricately?

I'm actually amazed, teach me your ways :pepe-hype:
