If you were given the resources to debut your own girl group, what kind of group would it be?

  • In this scenario, you're debuting a girl group in today's era of K-Pop, so take that into consideration.

    Also consider the following factors:

    • What will the concept be?
    • How many members will there be?
    • What type of music genres will the group specialize in, if it all?
    • Who would be your target demographic
    • What music market (think Western/Korea/Japan) would be your primary focus?
    • What would be your promotion strategy? How would you make them stand out?

    I think that's enough factors.

Girl group stans, show me your creativity and ingenuity.

  • Creativity isn't my strong suit but I'll give it a shot.

For concept, I think maybe a sort of fantasy concept. I'm not against cute songs, but I'd like something that's maybe a fusion of Dreamcatcher and ARTMS.

There are a few songs in ATEEZ's Outlaw album that give off fantasy or just overall themes that you'd see in a cool and intense TV show or movie. You know how important music is to really make the viewers feel intrigued and emotional. I'd like my girl group to have those kinds of songs. Now that I think about it, New Jean's League of Legends song "Gods" is similar to the kind of vision I have.

Member count, I think I'd prefer it to be a smaller group of maybe 4-5 girls. I love LOONA, but 12 girls is a LOT. And ARTMS/LOOSSEMBLE/Yves/Chuu are currently shining in their post-LOONA placements. ARTMS and LOOSSEMBLE are great as 5 member units. DON'T CALL ME A FAKE ORBIT BC I DO MISS OT12! I also like how AESPA and Red Velvet function.

Music genre... I guess I already kind of described it when describing my concept haha. So refer back to concept!

Target demographic would be probably 20s to 30s. I'd want there to be more intense themes. But not too intense that it dissuades younger people or older people from tuning in.

Music market would probably cater more to Japan? I think? I don't think my concept would be all that popular but that's not what I'm going for anyway. Hopefully in this alternate world, my GG would pick up a few fans internationally.

This might sound like a lame promotion strategy, but I think it'd be fun posting them playing D&D on Youtube. I don't personally play, but I've enjoyed seeing people post their campaigns online. It'd be hard, but I think it'd be fun to incorporate parts of their campaign into the music videos/group lore.

  • Concept: idk but something original AND a clear image so NO completely different vibe and sound from comeback to comeback but ALWAYS reinventing and evolving the concept.

    Probably 5 members

Music genre? I would seek always pop perfection, no reason for something different when i think kpop is super shallow. The songs would also have to be EASY to sing along, not for the members but for the PUBLIC. Example: kitsch chorus is difficult for commoners to sing along. I am chorus isnt

    Target demographic: girls and gays

Music market: none in specific i think if it's good enough it will be successful enough

Promotion strategy: good question i would need to think more about this cause it's a complex answer and would have to change depending on the resources i had

But imo the key thing is be original and make something of high quality and promote it

I listen to some kpop bsides and i think it would work super well if properly promoted and with the right concept. Examples:

I can imagine a cute gg with a barbie-like type of concept that is very sassy on stage performing this and becoming a hit because the members would sell the image well:

I can imagine a darker, more badass gg with futuristic gothic looks performing a song like this with incredible stage presence and performance

Or a sexy mature gg performing this in a very dramatic and magnetic way, using play of lights

But it depends on way to many factors if it will translate into success or not. Imo the most important is the quality of the song, the concept and the charisma of the members. Yet at the end of the day it really is all about luck.

Imo SM only stayed at the top because it's a company that will always prioritize music quality and originality. People never know what to expect from SM besides QUALITY. Even if it's not for general public, SM always confidently release something that fans will LOVE. Their love or hate strategy is genius, regardless of the song, people will never be indifferent about it. I would keep that in mind when creating a kpop group.

narcissistic, my god i love it

  • 4 member GG, all wasians - basically a group full of Nancys xD.

They have to be super pretty like at least a 9 on a bad day, and natty so that means no surgery :uh-uh-bunny:

Have like an anime/goth aesthetic - tatts, piercing, black hair etc. 🖤🌹🔪🕸️🩸

Heavily market the group in europe which is still an untapped market for GGs imo

Since everyone has an attention span of a 5 y.o theses days the songs would have to be super short and catchy, no more than 2 minutes

    Music wise, similar to:

I’d also include a lotta controversial and salacious lyrics that wouldn’t fly in K-pop. But hey like they say, any publicity is good publicity :smirks2:

  • I would NOT debut any group, If I have the resource, I would give it to MAMAMOO, because they deserve someone who can promote them worldwide. 😉

I'd debut a group like them anyway, so...

But, I'm gonna still answer to your question.

    • What will the concept be?

No concept needed, just talented girls who can do everything!
    • How many members will there be?

      4 members only!
    • What type of music genres will the group specialize in, if it all?

      Every genre!
    • Who would be your target demographic

No one, they have to create music on their own and for themselves! Self-producing team with the help of the best writers and composers.
    • What music market (think Western/Korea/Japan) would be your primary focus?

      No limitation.
    • What would be your promotion strategy? How would you make them stand out?

Weekly Variety content on their main channel, BTS videos about how they create the music and choreos, daily life vlogs etc. Let them choose which show they want to appear. There's no need to send them somewhere, where they don't want to be. Also, hiring FANS to promote them worldwide! Why? Because no one can do a better job than fans!

    This is it, basically!

  • What will the concept be?

It would've been similar to Red Velvet's Velvet side, but consistently. I would focus on stabilizing their identity in a dark-ish image with sensual/romantic/female empowering R&B tracks.

How many members will there be?

    5. Around 20-21yo each at debut.

3 koreans, 1 japanese and 1 member from SEA. One of these koreans would be ethnically korean, but from a country that has english as native language.

What type of music genres will the group specialize in, if it all?

    As I said, R&B.

Who would be your target demographic?

I'd like them to appeal to both female and male general audience, but appealing mostly for female fans, simply because people who actively follow K-pop are mostly women, so their fanbase could grow bigger.

What music market (think Western/Korea/Japan) would be your primary focus?

Primary Korea, so I'd debut them in Japan in their second year, then I'd worry about West later after they are stabilized. First of all, It's a girlgroup. You want it or not, girlgroups need actual hit songs to grow a fanbase and expanding their global popularity. Focusing on West first is just dumb move, because the international community won't care about them If they don't have hits and they won't have Korea/Japan to back them up when everything goes wrong in West.

What would be your promotion strategy?

I noticed I lowkey answered It above and will complete It below.

How would you make them stand out?

I'd want them to be a vocal-focused group, because of the genre I'd push them for. R&B is a genre that shines the most through great vocal technique and great vocal tones.

No rap. No hardcore dancing moves. Just Simply and memorable dance moves that can be replicated in variety shows and social media by variety stars, idols, influencers (that I'd pay to promote my group on their tiktok channel) and fans.

I'd use all my connections (I don't know If they would be big or not) to push them everywhere from tv programms to youtube shows to music shows, to festivals, to collaborations with senior/bigger artists.

I wouldn't hire too many different producers to compose their songs. I'd primary focus on 1 or 2, cause too many people working for a group might hurt their identity and might be harder to stabilize a color for them. But, as a preference, people who aren't working with any other K-pop group/act atm.

  • Very interesting responses and approaches so far. Some of it very novel (the D&D variety content would certainly be something I've never seen before kahei ), and some of it is very wild, like an intentional Wasian lineup.

Keep them coming. It makes for a good read.

  • If my goal is to make money?

    • What will the concept be?

SNSD's concept with a splash of NewJeans's innocence and Blackpink's charisma.

    • How many members will there be?

    5. Too many and the west hates us. Too little we can't cover up weaknesses.

    • What type of music genres will the group specialize in, if it all?

We are trend chasers. 25% of our budget will be figuring out ways of exploiting the TikTok algorithm.

    • Who would be your target demographic

Kids, teen girls, and uncles. Teen girls can get the parents to spend, uncles can spend, and we indoctrinate the kids when they're young.

    • What music market (think Western/Korea/Japan) would be your primary focus?

Korea then switch to Japan+SEA, and then take on America. Latin America and Europe will be ignored. What is Australia?

    • What would be your promotion strategy? How would you make them stand out?

Payola. Playlisting. Put these girls everywhere from the Paris runway to 1000 won ramen packs.

These girls will be visuals among visuals. Karina, Wonyoung, and Sullyoon will avoid being near them just to not be outshone. Needs at least one Japanese member and one American, preferably Korean-American. They also need to dance well. If Star Dance Battle was around today, other groups are ducking the invitation.

    My org:

    Shadow CEO: me

    CEO: Bang

Dance Instructor options: Bailey Sok, Hyoyeon, Kahi, Minzy

Singing Instructor options: Taeyeon, really any first or second gen main vocalist is an option

Producers/Writers: Soyeon (to lead our conquering of Korea), Yoasobi (for Japan, temper with Utada if she's back in peak form or another artists), Teddy (pay him some money to motivate him for the Americans; tell him to dust off his 2NE1 songs)

Members (if I'm using currently active idols):

    - Le Sserafim Sakura: Give her T-ara Boram number of lines if necessary. She is our front-woman for Japan.

    - Blackpink Lisa: the Americans and SEAs will love her. She can be our rapper. She's still a soloist, so she counts.

    - Aespa Karina: for the K-netz simping.

    - Everglow Yiren: for the Chinese fans

    - Chung Ha: she's lived in America

    Boom. Trillions of wons.
