Was Aespa’s Girls era better than Spicy era?

  • For Girls, everyone loved Illusion, they were in the US promoting Life’s Too Short, attending festivals and talk shows, giving speeches at the UN. Girls was a hated song at first but it still left a stronger impression than Spicy. I felt Spicy was released and it’s already not talked about. Is Spicy, the song and promotion, a downgrade for Aespa?

  • They were coming off the high of the NL/Savage era and the metaverse was supposed to be "the next big thing" during the covid era when everyone has to stay inside. But everything changed, metaverse became a joke, people got fatigued with hearings about AIs, people found out Aespa's concept was just a cover for Sooman's scheme to buy land, and SM was no longer that "respected", as much as that can be said. So while they were considered the leaders of their generation just a year ago, now they were catching up in the era of IVE/NJ/LSF/GIDLE.

But the metaverse thing makes people talk about them, even if it’s negative. Their concepts become generic now that’s why people talk about them less.

  • This era (especially WtMY and Hold on Tight) made me actually enjoy aespa music when, and I'll be hoenst, I really didn't like their previous stuff. I've lightened up a LOT on aespa this year.

But it does make me think... if someone who did dislike a groups previous "iconic" work really enjoys their new stuff, does that possibly indicate that a group has shifted too much?

  • I love the conspiracist bullshit that aespa is falling behind other groups. A melon top 1 hit with the best selling gg album this year must be a b-list thing.

I like Girls more as a song (I love Spicy too), but promo wise Spicy era was clearly better. We had more content this year than in their whole career, the bsides and the performances are amazing, all the girls were praised, I couldn't wish for more. This thread is a set up like all the ones from this user, but I'm not impressed our resident My is here creating negative narratives about aespa lol

  • the song

    lol nope.

besides the tetris song, which are loved by many even by non mys, other spicy era songs are also good!

wtmw got a good reception, same with spicy.

    and promotion

well, do you really think that them, had a speech at UN, was counted as a promotion??

also in the girls era, by them promoting at US, they are kinda trading off their SK promotion.

Is Spicy, the song and promotion, a downgrade for Aespa?

well, I won't talk about sales and charts, because I don't keep the numbers (I'll let other mys do that), but those two things were much better in this era.

    but since you say this:

Girls was a hated song at first but it still left a stronger impression than Spicy. I felt Spicy was released and it’s already not talked about.

Maybe the downgrade that you think is the hatred towards them?

well, if that is what you mean, then, yes I gotta agree.

Since in the girls era they are indeed got so many hatred and bashed around. In contrast with spicy era, where people enjoy the their song, Karina becomes hot topic several times, Ningning stunned several people, etc etc. The only hate post that I see is when people mocking their styling at some music show, and when their antis are using the narrative of "Karina and friends", because this time they can't drag the title tracks, songs, nor their performance anymore..

Is that what you mean by stronger impression, the hate posts?

Also, those are just things that are "outside" growth.

    what about their "inside"?

In this era, the girls had a saying to their release this time. They had the opportunities to gave inputs for their cb. So it's a good thing!

My mys mutual on twitter also seems more happier in this era, since there are so many contents this time, in contrast for girls era.

  • i love Girls more as the title track but Spicy has the overall best promotional schedule ever by SM standard

And MY World has better songs too. Spicy concept is a bit generic though hence they didnt create much buzz (not like Girls created a lot)

  • Personally Girls is still my fave title track from them, just coz of the epic nature of it.

As a promotional era though, Spicy is 10x better easily.

Multiple weeks of music shows, a top notch album, heaps more variety content, heaps more interactions with other groups, their performance skills and live singing have been so great to the extent that all the drags from before have just disappeared. Also, there are now multiple 4th gen groups as big or bigger in terms of success now, so they aren't just public enemy number 1 like they were before. Sales and charting have been great as well, so nothing much to drag them with. It's just been positives all around.

Girls era was just terrible in promo.

But it does make me think... if someone who did dislike a groups previous "iconic" work really enjoys their new stuff, does that possibly indicate that a group has shifted too much?

It means you should take more credit for your own personal growth :finger-heart:

It probably also helps that all the toxic Mys have left AKP and aren't using Itzy as a punching bag
