Imo, changing in korean demography of music listeners. First thing, there was no music industry in Korea before the 90s, this means every people on their mid 30s during the 90s were not music customers whatsoever and were likely largely absent on digital platforms during the early 2nd gen

Second thing BG and GG are different. BG are song for young people, mostly females. Gg are different, in Korea people see them as their standard pop singers, so people on their 30s and 40s listen to girlgroups

Third thing is kpop fans in Korea are not music fans or fans of the genre. They are fans of their idols only. The nuance here is a music or genre fan will seek and look other groups when their fave is on hiatus. For Koreans being obsessive and looking their bias content all they is their hobby. Which means if they find another hobby they will have no reason to stan anyone and likewise will not listen any Boygroups whatsoever

Now we have set them, let's understand their decrease in popularity

At start of 2nd gen, kpop audience (people from 10s to 25s) were 12% of Korean population, but likely over half of digital music customers. That's why idols heavily dominated Melon during 2nd gen

Now they are only 7% and probably are not even 20% of digital music

The market for Boygroups in Korea is now half of what it used to be, and represents only a tiny fraction of overall music customers

The decrease is not linear but exponential, because the less people are invested in male idols the less likely they are to get promoted and experience viral increase in popularity. Most of people are exposed to music rather than seeking it actively, popularity creates popularity

Gen Z girls started looking for other hobbies other than idols. Stanning male idols in Korea seems a very Millenial thing. Sure you still have Gen Z stanning idols, but most of teen seems to have grown weary of stanning idols. They only listen idols casually, if the idol can chart on top 100 they will listen. Seventeen is an example, but fandom is big enough to Crack the charts, so casual teens listen to them

The pandemic was the last nail in coffin to Boygroups. Being a fan in Korea stands for being obsessive and fanatic. Without music shows, concerts, fanmeetings and so on no 4th gen group hold any chance to grown a fandom

Please, don't jinx ZB1 lol A melon top50 would be already amazing for them. Even if the show was popular, they have two things working against them to hit big with the gp:

1- They're a boygroup.

2- Two chineses members, one as a center.

Ricky and Hao are liked for now, but we don't know if the ones who didn't watch the show gonna love them the same way lol And as a My, chineses members are always walking in thin Ice, any wrong move and they're cancelled

At least they gonna have high album sales, but that's not revolutionary for bgs.
