Changed the title of the thread from “since Korean media outlets ( aka mnet) are reporting some groups as part of 5th generation.” to “since Korean media outlets ( aka mnet) are reporting some groups as part of 5th generation. Do you think that”. -
what was wrong with the original thread?

I want to know if they would be considered 5th gen

It is a marketing strategy, so that they, company and fans, can media play things like most sales for 5th gen, 5th generation IT girl, and exclude other groups/idols that are more successful.
I wonder if it's gonna work though they might include some 4th girl groups to be 5th gen later like they did with the generation before.

It seems such a short moment ago we debated whether or not 4th gen had started and who was part of 4th gen.
I don't think New Jeans and Ive are 5th gen. If anything, they're gen 4.5.
Then again, back when Stray Kids just debuted, they were called gen 3 or gen 3.5, while most people now call them 4th gen.
Wouldn't surprise me if some already debuted groups are called 5th gen later.
Seems a bit weird to have 5th gen start, when 4th gen is not dominating over 3rd gen yet.

its true that generations are most easily defined in retrospect, like all historical periods. but the key thing is to have a strong narrative about multiple groups who rise and define a genuine vibe shift.
if you re-brand IVE and NJ (and LSF) as 5th Gen groups, then you just leave what, Itzy Aespa G-IDLE TXT SKZ as your 4th Gen narratives. Is that enough to carry a whole generation? Time will tell
I also have a theory about gens being harder to define because now groups debut and break records on touchdown, rather than slowly building a following like previous gens did.

Interesting theory.
I think that breaking records on touchdown might be one of the things that will mark gen 5.
Unlike what mostly Western stans predicted, Kpop is only growing further and reaching yet new heights.
Gen 1: mostly Korean success, with some outreach to Japan from particularly BoA.
Gen 2: growing large in Asia.
Gen 3: Dominating in Asia and growing larger outside of it too.
Gen 4: Kpop is clearly not leaving despite the predictions that it was a temporary fad. Selling a million is no longer exceptional.
Gen 5: In my opinion this hasn't started yet, but like I said before I wouldn't be surprised if New Jeans and co will be called that later. Might be marked by constant record breaking of ever growing fandoms and groups. BTS broke the dominance of Big3 and this trend continues with groups from smaller companies being able to have massive success stories. Even people outside of Asia see Kpop as no longer niche and are happy to play Kpop songs without thinking it something particularly out of the norm (like we can see with Cupid's success). The only thing that will probably continue to lag behind is Western radio and playlisting as they try to protect their own artists from the competition.

That's because Itzy, G-idle, and Stray Kid were never apart of the same generation as IVE and New Jeans to begin with. They are late 3rd gen or 3.5 gen groups. 4th gen started in 2020 and it's down right laughable to try and claim that New Jeans/IVE/LSRF and Baby Monster aren't in the same generation because literally, what excuse could you possibly come up with that justifies putting them in separate eras?? These companies need to stop with the media play before they start getting dragged.
Imagine how stupid it's going to look to make a headline with something like "Baby Monster, the first 5th gen idol to hit 1 million in album sales!" as if IVE, New Jeans, LSRF, and Aespa aren't all right there. When you create a new category that excludes all your peers and not yourself, of course you can boast about achieving anything. But it will only serve to make you appear delusional. People are going to look at chart accounts with only 1 name listed on it celebrating some record that has already been broken, and laugh.

4th gen has ended and 5th gen has started !! Where is your solo debut @taehyung jungkook
Maybe in 6th generation
-
4th gen is literally still dominating.
Whether 5th gen is incoming or not, IVE and New Jeans are leading the pack.
When Baby Monsters debuts, maybe they will join them, but if they don't, 5th gen might become a lost generation.
IVE and New Jeans haven't even peaked yet? If they dominate the 4th and 5th gens, what's 5th gen gonna do lol?
