From what I can gather, koreans are very selective about their close friends. They also generally aren't very open to making new friends. I'm not surprised because they might be friendly with others but would not be comfortable calling them close. Different standards based on different cultures might have contributed to this misperception. In the west you call people your BFFs pretty easily and it changes all the time because it isn't that serious.

Tbh this is also an assumption. Just because that’s what they tell us that needn’t be true as well I’m sure there’s a lot of friendships and relationships among idols as well that it’s better not to reveal for publicity.
Some extroverts tend to be, and have, "fairweather" friends. A large circle of acquaintances and situational friends that they are "besties" with for the duration of the party or event but whom they rarely really interreact with otherwise. The "life of the party", the "social butterfly".
But the people they count as actual close, true friends they actively seek to hang around with, maintain an ongoing deep friendship and truly open up to, can be low.

This isn't shade or anything to the west but I went to US for exchange and everyone feels like....they know each other everyone is like "HEY HOW ARE YOY DOING OH MY GOD I MISSED YOU SO MUCH" and I'm like

i wouldnt believe either, this applies to all idols not just kai but no one will ever assume they have a thousand friends and their house is a clubbing extensions because it just doesnt give the dUaliTy people want from celebrities and it justs invites stalkers to dig even more into their private life to try to link things
This could be true about Kai but I also know that celebrities tend to have textbook answers to questions just to avoid revealing their private lives. And we all know the rivalry btn different fandoms, the last thing to do is start anything unnecessary in the name of the 'truth'. Also, friends fall out sometimes! Idols are human too.

Idols depend on fandoms for financial success and longevity. They can't be frank, they have to lie and only say what their fans want to hear to survive.
Western acts depend on the GP a lot.
