Whether or not its a returning customer base or those only there for the pandemic cope demand it is safe to say, both have happened.
has it affected the growth of 4th gen groups? yes. Is it something to dismiss them for? probably not.
Correct me if I'm wrong but afaik the only groups that sold over 1m during covid's peak (2019-2020) besides BP and BTS were NCT and Seventeen as far as I know. Hardly a boost. It was in 2021-2022 that things started to change with aespa, X1, TXT, SKZ, Ateez, Twice, Ive, Newjeans, Red Velvet and Itzy joining the team. Probably missed a group.
2019 was not the peak of COVID. It was 2020 and 2021. 2019 it started in China. It was only in March 2020 that the rest of the world put restrictions in place.
NCT and 17 sales themselves benefited because of COVID. And 2021 was still literally middle of COVID. We had COVID restrictions till mid 2022.
Sales rise in 2021 and 2022 was the direct result of COVID.
I've said many times, I think Covid absolutely damaged Itzy's growth.
The group was designed for live performances and concerts, is famous for their live performances, and JYP sent on a showcase tour in the US fairly early in their career and pushed all the members hard to learn English ready for international performance and work?
When all that was taken away almost instantly, I seriously think it stalled JYP's plans for Itzy and the company never properly recovered or pivoted with them.

As we can clearly see, physical sales definitely saw an increase during the pandemic.

Covid wasn't a thing worldwide until 2020. Covid's peak was 2020-2021, and in 2021 ENHYPEN & SKZ also sold a million copies.
