Do you use self checkout in supermarket?

  • They renovated a few supermarkets and drug stores acorss my country and slowly build self checkout here wich we never had before and in some years all supermarket and drugstore and maybe some more shops will have this than

I was in a newly renovated grocery store yesterday who had a self checkout and jesus I was so ...

    1. It takes ages to find the right fruit or bread on the screen and than having to manualy also put a number in to count how many fruit or bread you bought is also stupid, what if someone can't do maths or wants to scam the store?
    2. It is also quit easy to forget to pay for an item. I almost forgot to scan the earrings I wanted to buy
    3. They specificly asked you if you scaned cupons, customer cards, other stuff for sales etc. wich annoys me when you did not even have any of this
    4. Tapping like 5 times on the card-reader just so the damn mashine prints you a bill is so annoying
    5. It takes me 2x longer to self scan all foods than when a sales assistant would do it for me
    6. It sucks for people without a card (or kids who are too young to pay with a card) because these mashines do not take coins and bills

The only good things on this are

    1. No annoyed customer waiting behind you when you are too lazy (unless the shop is crowded and hasn't gotten enough self checkout for everyone)
    2. There is a field on the screen who tells you how much money you saved with all the discounts, cupons etc. that you used (example: I payed around 14,50€ and aved almost 1€ on items who were on sale)

That stinks! A lot of old people refuse to do self check out because they don't underatand it so they should still have cashiers 😅

Had that in the first store in my hometown who got a self checkout

Somewhat like 6-7 months ago I waited in line for paying, near me a old man and a old woman with a rollator passed me and saw the self checkout

He: "Honey, look one of those new cash registers who don't requier a cashier"

Her: "Horst, there is a sticker on it, what does it read? I forgot my reading glasses at home"

He: Wrongly reads the sticker "In case of an emergency please contact a cashier" and tells his wife: "It says we can't use it without a cashier"

Her: "Thats bullshit, why do they put one here when we still need to be assisted?"

  • Depending on the store you may not have a choice. If your going to Walmart the man registers usually so back up unless you have all day you have to use self checkout. And truthfully I gurantee your not saving money using self checkout, your taking someones job away and increasing the stores profit.

  • Yeah, I prefer to be the one to categorize what goes into what bag...

The ones I've used have ways to enter the code for produce, so usually, it's not time consuming.

Biggest complaint I have is when you do something wrong and need to wait for an employee to negate it

Oh yeah, we always have a mix of machines that take both card and cash and ones that only take card...It's weird.

  • I've only ever seen it in Carrefour in the place I lived in Spain, and I started to use only that, because first, they're faster because less people use them, and second, everytime I went there and used the regular checkouts there were mistakes (like, they passed a product twice, or I paid for a product I didn't buy) and I had to spent double the time to fix it. So I better do it myself lol.

  • i always use them unless i buy smth with an age restricting because then i'd have to wait for an employee to come and check id

i work in a grocery store myself so i'm used to cash registers and so checking it out myself is way faster and it allows me to take my time putting my items into my bags

  • Like others have said - it depends on the number of items I'm purchasing and if I'm purchasing alcohol. I don't like having to flag down an employee for them to ID me and put in their code or whatever it's called, lol. But otherwise, I will happily go through self-checkout.

But yea ngl if you need to buy produce, I think they should have printed a barcode or the number to enter and stuck it on the product if it were bananas or other fruits and veggies to be checked out in the self checkout machines. + they should have a keyboard or a more responsive keypad too. I generally self checkout if I know everything has a barcode or I don't have too many items (less than ten).
