I don't think it's worthy of hate but he could have done it less obviously. As someone who was shy as a kid and would even have teachers forget my name (and have popular kids make a point of not knowing my name), it's embarrassing and hurts. As I've changed and became better socially, it's not a problem anymore but being "forgettable" does do damage so I can see why fans feel offended.
