I think I've seen it all now, when someone claims SNSD has less cultural significance than BLACKPINK.

This is why this thread exists. These kind of out of pocket proclamations needed to be addressed.

Lmao. What a false equivalence. The scale and range of BTS's accomplishments in the West, and the transformative impact it had on its reception and consumption in the West, is a far different story.

Truth be told, the LAST thing you should be doing is bringing up BTS, since the main arguments in favor of BP can be negated by "yeah but BTS was there and did all of it way better and on a bigger scale"

Also, in terms of their music, aesthetic and group composition, there are way more differences than similarities between Big Bang and BTS.

Meanwhile I've already quoted YG saying he intentionally used his well known formula and just applied it to BLACKPINK.

I just feel, as someone who got into K-Pop during second gen, primarily BECAUSE of YG groups, and as someone who has seen literally every chapter of the BLACKPINK story, SNSD feels like the more impactful group on the industry.

Perhaps it's impossible for me to feel otherwise as a Blackjack.

You could even say BP is a glammed up 2NE1 on steroids.

I don't think they don't have any impact on the industry or that it's not significant, but when I compare them to SNSD, they fall way short.

SNSD popularized diversity of concepts on a scale previously unheard of in K-Pop

I'm aware of all this and I was a BLACKJACK during SNSD's reign.

BP was formed using an existing formula and mould.

SNSD WAS the formula and mould. And there was no guarantee it would even work. They had to prove themselves.

Now people retroactively take what they accomplished for granted.

That's a cop out. There is no universally agreed upon methodology for comparing artists from different eras, but there is certainly space and opportunity to discuss and debate the topic. It's on the participants to figure out the optimal method for contextualizing and comparing achievements, being mindful of the differences in the competitive and even social environments they were achieved in.

We do it ALL the time in sports. Literally every day to the point of exhaustion.

So it is very possible to compare. And in my opinion, I honestly think it's a cold take to claim BP have had more impact than SNSD.

It's such a low level deflection tactic, and we're not going to fall for it.

AKP Blinks have been very loud in proclaiming BP is the most impactful and influential girl group in K-Pop history, but so far I've only seen "LOOK AT THE NUMBAHS" and nothing else.

Meanwhile, we have been detailing the many ways SNSD has a transformative impact on the industry and established a new standard and precedent for what girl groups can do and be. They're not only commercially successful but they innovated and shifted the entire paradigm of girl groups in K-Pop.

Even just from a line up perspective, no company was debuting huge girl groups with multiple defined roles and positions until SNSD did it.

At the end of the day, BLACKPINK isn't anything we haven't seen before. Girl crush. 4 members. Teddy produced.
