Alot of idols are born rich, I assume that's how they end up paying off their trainee debt. And in a high-risk industry like the idol industry where you never know if you'll blow up or not, they can always rely on their families' wealth if the idol thing doesn't work out. They also get more opportunities to train & hone their skills before they audition so they have a higher chance of getting in the company & debuting.
This is exactly how it was explained to me when i first got into Kpop.
It's like the exact opposite of the American dream/fairytale where a down on their luck kid, washing dishes doing odd jobs to make ends meet, suddenly gets that big break to achieve his or her dream and breaks through to superstardom.
In Korea, labels want trainees from rich families to pay off debts and even help the company with $$$ for promotions and other expenses. It's a symbiotic relationship, because the trainees are willing to give up their rich lifestyle to live in crammed dorms, starve themselves, and work 24-7, all for the chance of being an idol. For them and their parents, it's worth the money and the personal hardships.
